BAIL OUT THE PEOPLE - NOT THE BANKS


* Demand that the first item in any emergency federal legislation be protection for the victims of this crisis, the millions facing foreclosures and millions of others who are seeing their communities destroyed by the foreclosure epidemic brought on by the predatory lending and fraud of the financial industry.

* Demand the enactment of an immediate 2 year federal moratorium on all foreclosures. Such a moratorium is mandatory under federal law, which mandates the imposition of a moratorium on foreclosures whenever there is a declaration of a State of Emergency.

* During the moratorium, an oversight committee of community representatives, civil rights organizations, unions should review and adjust every mortgage in the country, so people’s house payments reflect the real values of their homes and their ability to pay. Such oversight cannot be left to the bankers or even to federal judges who are often disconnected from the reality facing working people today.

* Demand that rather than spending $1 trillion of taxpayer money to bail out Wall Street, that money be used to guarantee people’s needs, for decent jobs, health care, education, etc. It is the decline in wages, massive restructuring that has eliminated millions of decent paying jobs, and spiraling health costs that in large part has brought on this crisis, forcing people to take out unaffordable predatory loans just to survive.

The Moratorium Now! Coalition has been pressing for a statewide moratorium on foreclosures in Michigan and recently held a demonstration in Lansing, MI to support SB 1306, which would put such a moratorium into effect.

The Coalition is also demanding that new Detroit Mayor Kenneth Cockrel declare a State of Emergency in Detroit, the hardest hit city in the country by the foreclosure epidemic with an 18% home vacancy rate, and formerly apply to Governor Granholm to place a moratorium on foreclosures in Detroit pursuant to MCL 10.31

11. I think you missed Orwellian_Ghost's point

Orwellian_Ghost was saying that nobody's talking about foreclosures, because people are too busy talking about Warren and gay marriage.

While it's a topical issue, it's not nearly as life-threatening as people getting kicked out of their homes--esp. during bitterly cold weather such as we're having now.

If we don't have economic security taken care of first, people won't be able to afford a marriage license, pretty soon. I'm a lesbian, but I've been evicted, and let me tell you...when you have no place to go, getting married is the last thing on your mind.

People just don't understand this, because they're nice and comfy in a warm home, with food on the table. But when a disaster of that magnitude hits YOU, suddenly your priorities change real fast.

Yes, I want the GLBT community to be able to marry. I'm equally passionate about being pro-choice, feminist, and many other things. But if we don't jump-start the economy and create jobs ASAP, people will be too busy eking out a living to work toward achieving gay marriage.

I believe that's what Orwellian_Ghost might have been saying. :)

... nor the importance of the message.

But for maximum effect, it should be its own OP (and it's already written, and would make a GREAT one), rather than being a reply inserted into a thread on a different topic.

And my OP isn't about Warren or gay marriage - it's about equal rights for all citizens. The topic may be at the forefront right now because of the Warren fiasco - but whatever puts it on the front burner is fine with me.

I am not trying to be dismissive or flippant, believe me. I think that's part of the problem we ALL have nowadays - there are just SO MANY issues that need to be addressed immediately, each one vies for our attention simultaneously.

And they are all inter-related - poverty, homelessness, civil rights for all, unemployment, a return to the rule of law, torture, war, famine, global warming - the problems are mind-boggling in their magnitude, and it seems that one cannot be solved without addressing the other, and the other, and the other yet again.

May God be with you, my friend - may He be with all of us, because we sure can use the help.

10. A couple of points

1) While Michigan does make it into the top ten states effected by the mortgage crises it is not remotely close to the top. The highest states are Nevada, Arizona, Florida and California. The states that suffer the biggest foreclosure are the states that that had the biggest bubble. There is no question that Los Vegas is the hardest hit city with average decline in property values of over 50% leading to a collapse of the retail market and no private sales of homes being conducted - only foreclosure sales being sold from bank to bank. http://www.realtytrac.com/ContentManagement/pressrelease.aspx?ChannelID=9&ItemID=5420&accnt=64847

2) A two year moratorium would cause an end to private mortgage financing as no investors would be willing to loan the money. Think about it if the investors carried a big risk on the paper, and a relatively modest interest rate, why would anybody offer to loan money on new mortgages if they were told they had no chance to recover their assets if the home buyer refused to make payment.

3) It is possible for the government to completely take over most of the nations' mortgage financing on a socialist model. Singapore does it with a payroll tax (shared by employer/employee) that allows workers to build credit with their very first hour of work. People are able to afford a down payment after only a few years in the job market as the mortgage is worked out on the basis of both a monthly payment and future credits of the payroll tax.
