Just finished watching a screener of "Gran Torino" and was terribly dissapointed.
It was racist against Hispanics, was predictable, smarmy and unrealistic. An octogenarian kicking ass on a well fit twenty year old???

Plus the message of a gun being the ultimate equalizer could get a lot of well meaning people killed.

This movie was a great vehicle for Clint, but he was just trying to recreate the man that Sergio Leone created.

Save your money.

go figure. oh well, I saw it in an entirely different way then you did. roger ebert gave it 3 and a half stars and saw it in the same way i did. i guess everyone sees things differently. :)

2. And that's great.
There were many great scenes in it for me, but in the particular mindset I was in (I just finished the screener of "The Day The Earth Stood Still" minutes before and was feeling even more progressive than I normally do.

It's good to have differing opinions here.

4. This is the first time I've heard of this film, but you do know his wife is Hispanic, right?
I just read the synopsis on IMDB and it sounds like it could go either way.

It is amusing when they have really old guys kicking young guy's asses, but hey, I guess if Dustin Hoffman chasing down and beating up a 20 year old guy that looks and runs like a track star, a la Serpico, is within the realm of suspended disbelief why not?

6. I haven't seen it, but...
I do believe I know the scene that you're referring to. In the NY Times review, they also mentioned that immediately after that scene comes one where Eastwood is out of breath and struggling to open to front door.
