Flying J files Chapter 11 bankruptcy: Travel centers will remain open

Staff Reports
Published: December 22, 2008

Flying J, Inc., and and its Big West refining and Longhorn Pipeline subsidiaries have filed petitions to reorganize under Chapter 11 of the U.S, Bankruptcy code, the company announced Monday.

Acording to a release from the company, all travel centers will continue to operate. A Flying J Travel Center has been open in Dothan since February of 2007.

“Even though Flying J has been a successful company, it faced near-term liquidity pressure from an unprecedented combination of factors: the precipitous drop in the price of oil and the lack of available financing from its traditional sources due to disrupted credit markets. With a sudden and unanticipated inability to meet its liquidity needs, the company had no other choice than a Chapter 11 filing to provide the time to work through a solution,“ the release states.

1. Damn. I hope they re-organize successfully.
The Hook is one if my favorite truckstop chains. I fuel there as much as possible, the food is usually decent, and the places are kept clean.

I don't believe they gave the large commercial truck fleets the discounts on fuel that the T/A and Pilot truck stops did, and depended more on smaller fleets or owner/operators for revenue.

With trucking freight tonnage in the absolute dumper, I could see their gross revenue declining precipitously.

2. Stopped at them many times over the years
Only had one bad incident there (well, maybe 2) but over all they were clean and had quick and hot food so I could get back on the road quick.

3. I always thought Flying J was clean and a good stop...
..There wasn't many of them.. but they tried.

We need more competition in truck stops.. not less. Let's give the trucker a clean shower.. a good cup of coffee and fast service. Is that too much to ask for someone who is bringing food to your table?
