"Well, are you? Are you a bunch of pussies?"

After listing a litany of abuses by the Bush administration.

Hilarious.

He's absolutely right.

Outsourcing manufacturing is one of the most idiotic and shortsighted strategies US corporations can engage in. Henry Ford knew that that it was a Corporate responsibility to enrich it's own consumers.

Quarterly earnings reports have overridden corporate self-preservation.

72. Viacom is suing Google right now - actually TDS covered it tonight
It has nothing to do with that particular show - you can see it on Comedy Central's website. There used to be thousands of clips from both shows on YouTube until Google bought them, and Viacom sued. The clips were all taken off. People still put them up, but as soon as they find them, they're removed.

Now Google is suing Viacom back, so it could get interesting. Jon Stewart said it seemed to him having the clips up would be a win-win for everyone - promotion for the shows, and viewers for YouTube. I believe it's just Viacom looking for money, or feeling they're losing money by having them on there.

I used to spend hours catching up on old shows that I'd missed before I discovered the two shows - it's really too bad.

For some reason, I can't see videos on Comedy Central's website. Probably an issue of old software.

Crooks and Liars put up the clip mentioned in the OP. Is Viacom going to sue them too?

I only recently got DSL, so I know what you mean about missing great bits on TDS and Colbert.

Jon's partially-bleeped, wounded accusation that she had led him down the garden path was just priceless, and she was really enjoying "correcting" him (actually, Bolton!).

45. No. They just listen to the electorate - unlike you.
Seriously, am I the only voice of sanity around here?

Even given the controversial premise (that Democrats like us almost universally accept, but Republicans reject) - that it can be proven that Bush lied us into the Iraq War, independents are opposed to impeachment by a factor of 49% to 43%.

Your little graphic shows just how little you (and apparently everyone else posting to this thread) understand about how to be successful in politics. You don't call people "FuckWipes" and then expect them to support you.

61. So because of some poll we should not do what's right?
Edited on Thu Mar-22-07 06:24 PM by Pawel K
I'm not gonna play the 1960s civil rights movement card here, but how can anyone here sleep at night if they refuse to fight for what is right because it also happens to be unpopular?

Your premise that proving Bush lied us in to war would be difficult to do is a bunch of crap. Anyone that will take a serious look at all the evidance out there will be able to come to only one conclusion.

Look at the NIE of 2002 which said that Saddam did not have a serious weapons program and was not a threat.

Look at what Condi and Powell said 2 years before the invasion. How does a country go from not having any capability to build weapons of mass destruction to actually having weapons of mass destruction only a year and a half later.

Look at the letter Bush wrote to congress the night of the invasion.

Look at Bush's SOTU from 2003 and the entire Plame affair that followed.

And finally look at the Downing Street Memo written in 2002 which said that the Iraq invasion was a done deal and they just needed to fix the facts to fit their policy. This was happening at a time Bush was telling congress and the american people that he wasn't even thinking of military action and that all options were on the table.

How could anyone know all of that and believe Bush didn't lie us in to war? The polls already show that if Bush lied us into war most of the country would support impeachment.

66. Still -- politcal success doesn't have to be completely absent of process.
I think I like the way this is proceeding. It's almost like he's impeached already. All of them are being impeached every single goddamn day, these days. Rats are rolling over right and left. Seams are ripping. I would welcome impeachment, personally, but even without it, I think there is now in place a three-generation cultural meme that identifies Republican as the sickest and most insanely vile breed of criminal there is.

They went for the brass Fascist ring, and fell short, in Full View, thank you very much, certain incredibly brave Americans whom I shall always write and think of fondly until I die. Republican stands for Criminal. Torture. Greed. Destruction. Disorder. Satan. Notice all the new punk terminologies are Republican-focused -- not so much old Scratch anymore, no, now we all know who the true Immoral, Un-American Demonic Lying Filth are. It's the GOP.

Either way. I would dearly love to see a Democratic President and Congress and Senate with large majorities confirm a Supreme Court Justice and pass some heavy-duty campaign finance reform. Goddamn, I would say. Goddamn right on. And nothing but paper in my ballot, please. And no contractors involved in ANYTHING EVER AGAIN, unless they're personally vetted by President Gore. Yeah. Know what I mean? That old-time Good Government. Hell, yeah.

Impeachment, go for it, don't go for it -- that's not gonna change the New Thought -- Conservative Criminal. Criminal Conservative. It's what they've done. They have done it. It's the Meme.

Sadly, I figured all this out in 1977, when I started reading the newspaper. Conservative newspaper (Arizona Republic), but I still voted Democratic in my first election, at 18 -- for James Carter. It was easy to see for me, clear as a bell.

Dismaying that so many seemingly intelligent people are so mystifyingly bewitched by Fear and Money. Head down in the mud. Looking Backward. While the rest of us lift the world. It does set me back, especially now, that there would be anyone left over there. Apparently a third of us are real fans of Global Suicide.

We're helping them, and us, either way.

If you deleted your audio drivers you would have to reinstall them and installing media players like Real won't help until you do. Maybe you should ask in the Computer Help forum as this kind of thing could be pretty involved.

36. Tragically spot on. Impeachophobia has turned them into cowering wimps.. . .
. . .but impeachophobia CAN be cured!

Members of Congress are trapped in an impeachophobic bubble of group-think, rationalization, self-censorship, and denial. As long our so-called "leaders" remain in the grips of impeachophobia, our demands for impeachment will just keep sliding off like water off a ducks back.

They can recover. We can inject reality into their bubble if more of us challenge the http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=337814">rationalizations for inaction that are so pervasive in our own ranks "out here." We can do it if more of us get in the faces of our so-called "leaders" too. Their defenses are powerful but not insurmountable. If we realize that it is up to us, we are far more likely to do what is necessary.

47. Let's not forget the refs. In this game of politics...
... today's game is hardly being played on a level playing field, or with unbiased refs. The "news" media has been failing miserably in their role as arbiters of truth, so critics of the Right Wing are routinely battered by the RW echo machine.

We *do* need leaders willing to take risky stands, but let's not forget that it's a rigged game.

Edited on Thu Mar-22-07 02:22 PM by Dr Fate
Will it look like "whining" if we make a crazy, radical, accusation that the media made literally hundreds of false statments that led to public support of the invasion of Iraq?

Yeah- I know, "the people" would never believe that. ;)

But seriously- "the people" know that the media is full of crap-and they know the media had a huge role in presenting false information to the public concerning Iraq. It would be quite easy to establish a pro-war, pro Bush bias-pretty much like shooting fish in a barrel.

That is, if media bias is the real reason that impeachment is being held up. Is it?

If media bias is what is holding up impeachment, then I need to see some top Democrats adressing media bias- excuses wont keep me from demanding that DEMS fight Bush.

Given the obviousness of the Right Wing tilt to the mainstream media, how is it that the media is still largely perceived as "liberal"? And why do we continue to lose airtime ground to the Right Wing?
    (we gain a somewhat balanced and only slightly Left-of-Center Keith Olbermann for 2 hours per-night (1x2) on a sparsely carried cable network, while the profoundly Right Wing and fact-challenged Glenn Beck is carried 4 hours per-night (1x4) on the most widely carried cable news network, and the factually-deficient Tucker Carlson finds himself airing 2 hours per-night on the same network as KO.)

Please note that I make this reply after watching some of Glenn Beck's program last evening, for the first time, feeling somewhat masochistic... and was literally *shocked* at the degree to which the show mimicked the fictional talking head lunatic from the movie 'V for Vendetta'. The show literally seems one step away from calling for imprisonment of all registered Democrats. And, sadly, skipping over to view a bit of Lou Dobbs, I found his presentation only slightly less Rightward, especially in regards to his echoing of the Right Wing "political spectacle" talking point regarding the US Attorneys issue.

I was not, and am not, saying that the Dems should sit idly by and fatalistically accept this skewed status quo. I am simply saying that the Democratic leadership is not solely to blame for *OUR* predicament. I certainly believe we need more risk-taking leadership (ala Wellstone or Lamont), but we are an astoundingly ignorant and indolent country, with a corrupted media and less-than-ideal two-party political system.

I'd say that "the people" have let the Democratic Party (and the nation's principles and democracy) down, as much as we like to say that a lack of Democratic leadership is the problem. Take for example the most recent Senatorial election in Connecticut. I'd say the people of CT were given a fairly obvious and stark choice between same-old and forward-thinking leadership, and a sufficient percentage of CT voters (and Democrats) voted for the effectively-Republican candidate.

The Senate is a mere one seat away from Republican control, and boldly jumping for impeachment without building a sound case -- publicly and transparently -- through hearings and investigations, could give Loserman the political excuse he's looking for to jump ship to the Republicans, thus negating any ability to investigate.

(Personally, I *want* Lieberman to jump ship, but would prefer he do so closer to the 2008 elections. Further, I think impeachment and/or prosecution of Bush/Cheney is a necessity, in order to set/reset? precedent for acceptable/legal activities of the Executive Branch.)

Cheers!

p.s. For example, where are the ongoing, daily protests of CNN for their broadcast of what is effectively PR for the Republican Party? Where is the outrage?

59. I hear ya- but we cant always wait for the people. Sometimes we have to inform them.

Clueing them in to the fact that the media lied us into a war and supported Bush should not be difficult to do. Most people already know it in the backs of their minds- if they are not fully aware of it.

If this is really what is stopping us from fighting Bush, then it will have to be overcome- excuses are just not acceptable anymore.

76. Yes. We are ALL responsible for this situation. Even us DUers.
Maybe less so, but also responsible.

The time to stop this shit, when it would have been the least painless to the country, was 2000, when this abomination begun in felonious conflict-of-interest at the highest judicial level.

What did any of us do? Nothing. The boldest of us wrote a letter or made a phone call. (I cannot even include myself in that category.)

The Busheviks sent their operratives to stop the Miami vote count and they did so, essentially through terrorism (albeit a mild form of "brownshirtyness", the beating was one guy and relatively light, no broken bones or anything I believe).

Why were there no Democrats to stop them? Where were We the People when these Loyal Bushie goons subverted the process and started the whole BushPutinization of America?

ALL of us who did nothing on that day and others like it are responsible.

It's difficult to lampoon certain types of people if you cant use or make fun of the language they would use.

For instance: Could you imagine writers Mel Brooks & Richard Pryor making fun of Red-necks in Blazzing Saddles w/o using he "N" word?

40. Hahahaha! Colbert is so funny - and so on the money.
I think the Democrats are waiting for that last 30% in the polls to agree with the rest of us that Bush must go, because 70% is not enough.

LoL

51. Colbert: Go ahead. Impeach him! Impeach him twice.....
http://www.comedycentral.com/motherload/index.jhtml?ml_video=84035

Colbert: "Afterall, the pResident's been baiting you guys (Democrats) for six years...
    * WMDs
    * Iraq
    * Katrina
    * Valerie Plame
    * Signing Statements
    * Torture
    * Wiretaps
    * Secret Prisons
    * US Attorneys

"I think what the President is saying is 'If you don't impeach him now, you guys are a bunch of pussies.'

"Well are ya? Are you a bunch of pussies?

"(I think you are.)"

64. And that, sadly, is exactly the reason why DUers want him impeached.
Edited on Thu Mar-22-07 07:46 PM by Kelly Rupert
Seriously. It's just because we're sick of that bastard and we're sick of him walking over us with a smirk. We just want to show him who's boss. Fuck policy, fuck health care, fuck Iraq, fuck social security, fuck the environment, fuck everything and everyone else. We need to tie up the House and the Senate for the next year so we can kick Bush out of office nine months early. Because we don't want to be pussies.

You know, we can't just be adults about it and start trying to undo the shit Bush did to this country over the last six years. No, we have to make sure we impeach him, because otherwise we'll be pussies.

68. Actually, I think Colbert wasn't necessarily calling for Impeachment.
Edited on Thu Mar-22-07 09:03 PM by byronius
He may have been subtly mocking the Impeachment Advocates. Reminding them that immediate impeachment without investigation for reasons of masculine insecurity is what Republicans would do. Colbert is intelligent enough to conceive of such subtlety. It's how I took it, considering his character.

Impeachment also doesn't necessarily preclude work on health care and global warming. What if the Republicans See The Light (the end of the GOP) and call the faithful back (like my new Democratic father-in-law) with a good 'ol White House Cleaning? Moderate Republicans and Democrats, working five-day weeks -- they could pull it off, all at once. I wish.

I admit impeachment does seem to be becoming more and more irrelevant. We don't have the votes. I like all this investigations and these hearings. Very interesting stuff for history. Still -- there is the Grim Process of The American System. Technically, it's called for.

70. Of course he was mocking the impeachment advocates.
Edited on Thu Mar-22-07 09:16 PM by Kelly Rupert
And what I thought was sad was that so many of them are cheering and saying "right on!"

Hint: if your plan is something that Steven Colbert (the character) believes is a good idea for reasons you agree with, and reasons that are completely in-character for him, immediately reconsider your plan.

77. Two for two, byronius!
Another insightful post.

And yes, I am with you in the wishful camp that they could do them both.

(sigh) You made me think, because I guess you could say I am a firebreathing impeachment advocate (well...investigate, indict, impeach, of course) but it is true that in this crazy Infoganda-driven age it would be impossible to escape the vortex of 24/7 babble that would erupt. It would suck the rest of the work into oblivion. Maybe not totally, but badly nonetheless.

And I suddenly feel chagrined. Because Colbert was definitely mocking fire-breathing impeachment advocates (I think there were elements of both types of mockery - a fusion-piece, if you will) as well.

Oops. Everyone misses something sometimes.
