WILMINGTON, Del. -- Vice President-elect Joe Biden brought some holiday cheer to his hometown Wednesday, serving meals to the homeless at a soup kitchen in Wilmington, Delaware.
Biden said the long lines outside the Emmanuel Dining Room show that "a lot of people are hurting" and highlight the need for an economic stimulus package.
He said a stimulus bill should be the first order of business for the new Congress, and said he hopes President-elect Barack Obama can sign it as early as Inauguration Day. The administration's hopes to create three million jobs in two years.
Biden and his wife, Jill, donned aprons and plastic gloves to serve meatloaf to a few hundred people alongside dozens of volunteers.

They're not good everywhere else, but a lot of middle-class folks are getting killed too. So it's the number one priority for our administration,” said Vice President-elect Joe Biden.
Biden is not a stranger to Emmanuel, which is run by the Ministry of Caring. His sister is a board member and his family are volunteers and contributors. The Capuchin friar who runs the program says the Bidens are setting the right example.
“This is kinda home. And it's important for people to know who are standing out there in line that there's a lot of people who are thinking about them,” said Biden.
Even though he's about to be a heartbeat away from the presidency, when we were inside the Emmanuel Dining Room, we never heard the Bidens referred to as anything other than "Joe and Jill". And the Vice President-elect told us he hopes that at least around here, it's always that way.
