"Your date's over, mister"
"Your Dates Over Mister"

Quick-thinking San Francisco waitresses nail man slipping his companion a mickey

It looked for all the world as if the couple on a date -- he was darkly handsome and a little older than the pretty, petite blonde with the Russian accent -- were having a great time together.

"A really great time," their waitress, Karri Cormican, recalled thinking.

So it came as a shock when after the woman left the window-side table to visit the restroom, Cormican saw the man shake a white powder into the Hefeweizen beer he had ordered for his date.

"Did I really see that?" Cormican asked herself. "Why would he do that? It seemed like they were having fun."

(snip)

Or where a guy on a first date, like Joseph Szlamnik, at the time a 43- year-old senior management assistant for the San Francisco Unified School District, would commit a crime. Szlamnik was sentenced last week to a year in jail by Superior Court Judge Anne Bouliane on narcotic charges related to the incident.

(snip)

On the night in question, Cormican, 23, quickly approached the bartender, Hannah Bridgeman-Oxley, 27, and told her what she had seen.

The two women hatched a plan.

Cormican returned to the table and told Szlamnik and his date, whom the court identified only as Tatiana K., then 34, that the woman's beer had come from a fermented keg and that they were going to replace it.

(snip)

After seeing the white powder, Bridgeman-Oxley said she "panicked a little bit. We had to figure out a way to keep her away from this man."

Their chance came when Tatiana went outside to smoke a cigarette.

(snip)

Cormican had to repeat herself several times before Tatiana absorbed what had happened. And then things got even worse.

The bartender rushed outside to tell the two women that while they had been talking, Szlamnik had dropped two pills into the new beer Tatiana had left behind on the table.

"He did it again," she said.

All three women looked through a window and saw Szlamnik trying to wipe up beer that had foamed over the edge of Tatiana's glass and was fizzing as if there were Alka-Seltzer in it.

In fact, as Dr. Lemos would later testify, the pills were alprazolam, commonly sold as Xanax, a central nervous system depressant prescribed to relieve anxiety. "In combination with alcohol," Lemos testified at the preliminary hearing, the two drugs "are encountered frequently in drug-facilitated sexual assaults ... without giving the victim the chance ... to even realize what's going on."

On the sidewalk, Tatiana was sobbing. Bridgeman-Oxley stalked back into the bar with Tatiana following, swiped the foaming glass off the table and looked the stunned Szlamnik in the eye when he began to protest that she had served him a second bad beer.

He said to Tatiana, "Let's go."

"Your date's over, mister," the bartender told him. "She's staying with us."

(snip)

Last Tuesday, Judge Bouliane sentenced Szlamnik, who had no prior criminal history, to one year in jail but suspended six months of that. Szlamnik entered jail voluntarily in January after agreeing to plead guilty to transporting and furnishing a narcotic rather than to a crime directly related to a planned sexual assault. He is due to be released in May.

At the time of his plea, he was terminated by the school district, said a spokesperson.

Cormican had arrived in San Francisco from Fargo, N.D., only six months prior to the incident and still works at Noe's. She shrugs off any attempt to call her a heroine.

"It's just the kind of place where everybody looks out for everybody," she said recently while working behind the bar. "I mean, people look out for me. I hope."

It was the heroine who was from a red state.

The criminal element is just there for the Beach Boys concert.

What a great story -- not, obviously, about what the creep did, but how these women stepped in to prevent what surely would have been the rape of this young woman.

that he only got six months for what was essentially a botched rape, I guess next time he'll be more careful.
It pisses me off that we can toughen up on sentencing for crimes and then people like this can weasel out of them into different charges with lesser sentences.

30. My dad used to tell me that 40 years ago (at least 40!).
"Never leave a glass unattended, and if you do, don't drink it when you come back." He was worried about other kinds of drugs, but the lesson still applies.

Teach your kids when they're young, and maybe they'll remember it later on.

14. Good Post- Thanks!
Something my 30ish year old daughter tells me from her travels about NYC. You never leave your drink unattended, because you never know. I will pass this on to a college age niece as a cautionary tale, something that might be a good idea for those of us with young ladies in the family or extended families to do.....

16. Love how that story ended!
Wish the creep had been stuck with a sex offender charge, but at least he has to do some actual time in jail.

And six months served in a city or county lockup is worse than a year in a state prison. It's louder, scarier, cell doors clanging open and shut at all hours, hellish turnover, angrier guards, many inmates coming in still very high on their drugs and having to go cold turkey inside ... it's just a far worse place to serve time than a penitentiary.

I hope that bastard suffers plenty for what he tried to do. Makes me furious that this sort of thing is getting way too common. I hope women are wising up -- and stories like this one help to get the word out.

20. You're right. He should be forced to register as a sex offender.
And he should serve more time too.

This may be the longest six months of his entire life, but it's still a slap on the wrist compared to what he should have received.

39. You know, Im not sure what I believe his sentence should be. It could be
in fact, that he needs the Scarlet letter of sexual offender to stop his abusive acts.

However I would much rather see him simply learn to respect women, than solely to be shamed into submission. Although of course shame is a significant and necessary ingredient in his punishment.

But do we stop there? Just shaming a person won't change the behavior and the very problematic perspective that many sexist men hold. Pornography and the desensitization of dehumanizing acts on film is not helping matters either frankly.

I don't honestly know if individuals like this man can learn to respect others and/or respect women not as prey, but as people. I think they can, I just don't know what that would look like. Maybe having to work under women's authority?

Interesting and important question. I don't know the answer.

It's a damned shame that Szlamnik will only spend 6 months in jail. x(

This was premeditated attempted rape. This guy should be locked up for most of the rest of his life and he should be in court mandated therapy. He clearly does not consider women to have any more worth than as physical playthings.

She was drugged, kidnapped, and raped repeatedly and only was able to get away when her friends tracked her down to the slime's apartment and she rushed the door to get out.

If only she'd pressed charges. *sigh*

"According to the National Crime Victimization Survey conducted by the Department of Justice, 66 percent of sexual assaults in 2005 were committed by friends, acquaintances or other people intimately known to the victims. No tally is kept specifically of date rapes."

there are plenty of men who would have done the same thing as the waitress and bartender. We all need each other. This is not a gender only issue. As a man and I saw that, the perp would not have needed handcuffs upon his arrest as he would have been unconscious.

since this is an article about two women, that women can realize their strengths and power in situations like this, especially with other women, and it is often overlooked and disregarded that we do.

We are told we need a "man", but we are conditioned by a pretty male dictated and dominated culture to overlook the tremendous value in our nature in working with other women as well.

I apologize if I overlooked that important point you made. However, I was addressing more the situation in the article. In addition, I include my own experience and observations.

37. What a sweet idea! You know, my thought is they would just want those of
us who were impacted by this story to look out for others, in particular other women/sisters who are about to be put in harms way.

However, what a friend posted on this thread is truly the most important overall - for us to look out for other folks who may being exploited, bullied or harmed in some way.

Like one of the heroes in the story said, she would just hope someone would be looking out after her.

44. Another good point Nikki. We do the best we can.
Instincts can often tell us something just aint right.

That is often our best indicator - when everything "looks" right, but something still aint right.

Women's instincts are amazingly tuned, and we have been told to ignore them by everything from organized religion to advertising.

Our instincts in my opinion are our highest form of intuition. It is invaluable to us and certainly to men as well.

Sometimes those natural instincts can save lives, including our own.

However, I guess predators can be found everywhere.

I met a journalist recently who was working on a case in Texas of a policeman who wound up being a serial killer of a number of young women (the number is still unknown) and he committed suicide when he realized he was about to be apprehended. Apparently some of the other police were on to him and were trying to bust him at the time he killed himself. It was told to me that he had even passed a lie detector test.
