Labor Law question...California. Re: vacation paid vs. unpaid
I was informed a few months ago that since I had worked in my new job for 18 months, I had earned a weeks vacation and that I am required to use it before the end of the year.

I decided to take my vacation between Christmas and the New Year which was fine with my employer.

I was just informed Christmas Eve, by way of an email between my employer and her accountant that my vacation time is not paid.

I don't mind not getting paid for vacation time because I normally don't take vacation time. I was only taking it because I was told I had to.

Does anyone know if there is a Labor Law regarding paid vs. unpaid vacation time?

2. How could you "earn" a week of unpaid vacation?
This looks a lot more like a forced unpaid furlough, which your employer should tell you up front. You may not mind the lack of paid vacation, but others may not be able to handle a week without pay if they were not told in advance that it was necesary.

3. I'm the only employee...
I am a personal assistant. I guess I will just be unavailable for a few days. No worries.

Next discussion regarding vacation, I will get something done in writing.

Live and learn.

6. In California the law is
they either have to let you take it or they have to pay you for it. If they provide it they cannot take it away or tell you that it must be used by a certain time or you will lose it.
