Poll: Obama is man Americans admire most

By Susan Page, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — A month before his inauguration, Americans choose Barack Obama as the man they admire most in the world, according to a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll. It's the first time a president-elect has topped the annual survey in more than a half-century.

President Bush falls to a distant second after seven years as the most-admired man.

Hillary Rodham Clinton leads the list of most-admired woman, a spot she's held for 13 of the past 16 years — as first lady, then New York senator and now Obama's designate for secretary of State. A newcomer is second: Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who wasn't well-known nationally until Republican presidential candidate John McCain chose her as his running mate in August.

snip:"The survey of 1,008 adults, taken by landline and cellphone Dec. 12-14, has an error margin of +/—3 percentage points.

Among women, Michelle Obama is rated fifth, following talk-show host Oprah Winfrey at third and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice at fourth.

Among men, McCain is ranked third and three others tie for fourth: Pope Benedict XVI, the Rev. Billy Graham and former president Bill Clinton."

"... all over the world not just in America" as "... all over the world just not in America."

7. That's good and well-deserved.
I hope he is the greatest President in history.

He certainly comes into power at a time when that's what we need.

8. Good thing they didn't poll DUers.
That would have brought his numbers down quite a bit!

9. well.... DuUhHhH...! This is a surprise to any lucid person - why?
...I should clarify - any even-semi-lucid, oddball misfit (like me) as well as all the normal sane folk out there...

(note - my "duh" is not directed at you or your post, just the concept that the article was written and thought newsworthy. I think it's almost like writing a front page story like, "Newsflash! Kids like candy and toys! Survey proves sugar and playthings are Number 1 on an overwhelming majority of children!"

Obama has done a remarkable thing - he has brought back the legitimate idea and healthy concept of integrity, respect and he's given the nation someone she can call a hero - someone kids can look up to for the right reasons, not because of bling or athletic talent or body shape or beauty or all the wrong reasons for honoring a national figure.

No, I'm not forgetting the real heroes who die every day for us in Iraq - or give selflessly to others in heroic ways we'll never know about and are even more commendable compared to Obama... but he is the first national "good guy" we've had in - man, way too long...

His integrity raises us all up somehow, I think... I don't see it as surprising or newsworthy. It's just good. What's newsworthy is that he is the exception rather than the norm... considering nationally known individuals of any stripe. That's the story, but it requires a mirror. I think it also has a lot to do with the scrambling to criticize and "prove" him to be just another lowly, quasi-ethical, power-hungry celebrity pol. Ugh.
