A Christmas adventure with turducken

My goal was to make Christmas an adventure.

My daughter and I were spending the holiday alone. So I was in full wish-granting mother mode when she announced that we should have turducken for Christmas dinner.

Since I cook about a half dozen times a year, and each is a special occasion, I figured "How hard can it be?" You take a chicken, shove it up a duck, then shove that up a turkey. If women can give birth, this is possible.

So I violated every rule I've taught her about looking before leaping, checking the depth of the pool before diving and reading the fine print before signing and said, unwittingly, "Sure!"

And that's how we spent 16 hours preparing a dish with birds with whom I was so intimate, I didn't think I would later eat them.

But enough suspense. Here, as Monk would say, is what happened:

1. Actually, if I were desperate enough to want to do this...
Doesn't Prudhomme sell these pre-prepared and ready to cook? That's one question. But, my only answer is that I could never imagine myself cooking one of these...

2. We cooked one yesterday (pre-made by Tony Chachere company)
The meat was exceptional but the sausage-rice-cornbread dressing left a little to be desired. Several years ago we had one with seafood-cornbread dressing and it was excellent.

Plus we had tons left over to send home with the kids (and feed ourselves).

If I could purchase ready-to stuff in the oven, I'd be game. It does sound goo, especially with the seafood-cornbreak dressing. Where did that one come from?

13. Think we found it at the local Kroger......
VERY easy-just put in the oven, cook for 5 hours and carve.

Tasty too. I highly recommend it!

6. The first one I ever cooked was a disaster.

We were all wasted, and didn't want to wait all that time it took to cook.

So my wild-ass Father-in-Law decided that a big pressure cooker was just the ticket.

So into this huge cooker did go said turducken, soon to ooze from our collective memory thanks to some extra-fine libations.

(WHUMP!!)

It sounded like a mortar round had landed in the kitchen.

That thing had exploded in the cooker.

So we grabbed some tongs, spoons, and forks and all stood around the kitchen island, eating straight from the cooker.

It's a wonder none of us choked to death. We were laughing the whole time.

Mr. Dave at the Ridiculous Food Society is my new hero. He’s created the ultimate mashup of fast food goodness and a traditional home cooked meal…and of course he lined the whole thing with bacon.

The name of this culinary meld of goodness is “White Castle and Bacon Breakfast Bake”. Oh yes, you know what’s next…Mr. Dave took six White Castle “Sliders” (mini-hamburgers for you folks not fortunate enough to have experienced them), stuck them in a baking dish, removed the top buns, lined them with bacon & cheese, added some homemade batter, and cooked the whole shebang to a level of perfection we can only imagine.

Mr. Dave, we salute you.

7. We cooked turducken for Thanksgiving and it was great!
I'll admit that our local butcher puts them together for us. Of course, in parts of the South the butchers are more familiar with the idea.

BTW, we used a cranberry/brie stuffing.

9. I could see giving it a try if it were all pre-prepared, sans cooking
I've heard they are great... Maybe I'll spend next Thanksgiving in NOLA and let Prudhomme cook it for us...LOL
