A local Catholic priest reacted strongly to the flier recently published by the BSU College Republicans group, saying that even though they did not overstep their legal rights, they abused their moral obligation to respect people.
“People who use free speech to make fun of people, they don’t deserve any attention,” Father Jos/ de Jesus Camacho of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Boise said. “They are doing a disservice to themselves and to their party, and they are not ready to be politicians.” The GOP group created the flier to promote an address on illegal immigration.
The flier advertised that those who attend the meeting could enter a drawing for a free meal if they “climb through the hole in the fence and enter your false ID documents into the food stamp drawing.”
Camacho said he was disappointed that a group of well-educated college students would print something that would so clearly offend many people.
“People from a university, we expect more from them,” Camacho said. “If they have an education, if they have learned something, they are not showing this.”
