People go nuts when there's "weather" and end up doing stupid stuff that endangers them and others more than the weather does.

but I have to ask, how long have you lived in Tornado Alley? I've lived there all my life, have had some close calls, but know what to do. If you are new to the region, don't panic--just know to follow these guidelines:

1. Go to the basement or to an interior closet, and cover up with stuff like blankets and pillows. I usually take a battery operated radio, a flashlight, water,cell phone, and snacks with me, in case the worst happens--I can check weather reports, see the debris field, and call for help. The snacks help wile away the time until all clear.

2. If you are in your car, keep the radio on so you know the direction, speed, etc, of funnel clouds sighted. If one is bearing down on you, drive at right angles to it to get out of its path. My brother knew to do this and thereby saved his and his stepson's lives when a killer tornado swept through Marion IL some 25 years ago.

3. If you are caught outside, get into a shelter of some sort--a ditch is last resort. Don't try to hide under an overpass--the winds can suck you out or debris can hit you. Cover up with something if you can.

12. Tornado Watch/Freezing Rain Advisory

Yesterday we had temps in the 60's, very humid and then were put in a Tornado Watch. Over night we had thunderstorms that changed to ice as the cold front came through. This morning it looks like we are still in the TW but the Ice Advisory has taken precedence. It is 30 degrees and I can't decide if what is all over the yard is large sleet or small hail. I am so confused!

13. Glad to hear it passed over you....I remember

living in TN for a few months back in 1974 when there was this huge outbreak of tornadoes in the mid-region of the country...especially the one(s) that destroyed Xenia, Ohio.

I was living in a converted Military housing complex at the time with my (then) husband and two small children. Hubby was away at work.

At a particular moment I happened to look out the front living room window and saw a funnel cloud coming out of the sky. I was absolutely petrified...thought the kids and I were going to die. It went in the opposite direction.

OK, so I'm not really afraid of weather-related events except for tornadoes...which are relatively uncommon in Mass, but we do have them from time to time.

And I have recurring nightmares involving them, even all these years later.

I can't even imagine the trauma that must be suffered by people who have actually been affected by them.... :(

no basement where I lived either.

I was so scared I couldn't think of what to do...just sat in the middle of the living room with the kids and hoped we would survive if it came our way.
