Man shoots talker at movies, police say
(CNN) -- A man angry that a family was talking during a movie threw popcorn at the son and then shot the father in the arm, according to police in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

James Joseph Cialella was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons charges.

Cialella told the family sitting in front of him in the theater on Christmas Day to be quiet, police said.

An argument ensued while others at the Riverview Movie Theatre watched "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Cialella then approached the family from the left side of the aisle and shot the father, who was not identified, as he was standing between Cialella and his family, according to the police report.

The victim was taken to Jefferson Hospital with a gunshot wound to his left arm, police said.

Cialella was carrying a Kel-Tec .380-caliber handgun clipped inside his sweatpants, police said. He was arrested and taken into custody.

2. people talking during movies are annoying--but they don't deserve to be shot. couldn't that idiot
have just changed seats? when I ran a theater, and a customer complained about talkers, I would go in, and very nicely tell the talkers that they either had to be quiet, or leave--I would even refund the ticket price. that generally ended the problem.

27. It's the least they deserved.
Ok. Ok. I know it's not funny, but, honestly, when you shell out $40 for your family to see a movie, you're not there to listen to jerks on cell phones or 9 year old commentary.

Add to the list, people who open and close grocery bags and noisy food wrappers and peope who take children who are too young.

Ok. So don't shoot them. How about, slap them with a smelly old fish?

6. This happened to me last night, minus the shooting
There were 3 girls sitting behind me and my girlfriend who talked through the entire f'ing movie. I was a bit upset already, considering The Day The World Stood Still was a two hour waste of time.

I was not a happy camper between those two factors.

13. We had an illliterate guy sit behind us once and read the credits really loud
Edited on Sat Dec-27-08 06:05 PM by proud2Blib
Like I said, he was illiterate. And within moments, the whole theater knew. :)

Another time the guy sitting in front of us went to get an usher when some children behind us wouldn't be quiet. The usher said "they paid for their tickets just like you did."

We never went back to that theater.

14. I swear the three girls weren't even watching the movie
They literally asked every 5 seconds "Did (insert obvious plot twist that just occurred here) just happen?" Followed by "Oh shit." I wish it was only during the credits, it was a exasperating. I don't get why you would pay to see a movie then not pay attention and talk through the entire thing.

30. I might have shot MYSELF...
And your point below is spot on - THEY WEREN'T EVEN WATCHING THE DAMN MOVIE - THEY JUST WANT A PLACE TO TALK WHERE THEY WON'T BE EXPECTED TO BUY BOOZE.

Fortunately, I knew WAY better to see THAT movie in the first place.

7. That's why you don't carry guns in public.
It's just not civilized.

Nothing against guns in general- but you don't, DON'T, carry them in public.

16. You mean- using the gun?
I mean, honestly- how many chances does one get in a lifetime to legitimately defend themselves, intelligently, with a firearm in public?

The likelihood, in public, of a handy gun being used appropriately by a civilian is extremely low to none. More likely you get stuff like this.

Just don't do it.

18. Sorry but you will never convince me....

I used a firearm to defend myself and my wife. By "used" I mean I "presented" it. I didn't want to hurt anyone. I actually remember thinking "God. I don't want to kill this guy". We got stopped on way to car at grocery store late at night. Guy asked for the time, then "asked" for my wallet. His hands were in his jacket. Later I learned he had a knife. I pointed weapon at him and said no. No shots fired. Guy ran, I called the cops on cellphone. I couldn't describe him but luckily my wife could. Cops found him two blocks away on foot. Most "bad guys" aren't looking for a fight they are looking for a score. Most also aren't looking to turn robbery into a murder charge.

So I say shooting someone was uncivilized. You say him having weapon in public is uncivilized. If he killed a friend in the privacy of his house when his friend wouldn't stop talking during the DVD would that be more civilized?

The man is the story was a scumbag IMHO. Generally anyone who carries a weapon likely without a permit and without a holster is a problem.

I have carried a weapon legally for 16 years. Never shot anyone (only had to draw it once). Never accidentally discharged it either. Bought a custom fit holster. Irony is my carry weapon is Ruger LCP which is very similar to the weapon in the story. There is no safety, carrying it without a holster is the mark of an idiot.

I understand you don't want to carry a weapon. Fine. Don't I won't think anything less of you. Don't take my CHOICE away.

Did you wear you seatbelt today? Did you need it today? This week? This Month? This year? By the same logic pretty stupid to keep wearing a seatbelt and not needing it?

19. Your problem is idiots like this shooter in the movie theater
Pretty soon we will all have to walk through metal detectors to go see a movie because of dipshits like this. I don't want to take your right to carry away, but it is beginning to infringe on my right to go places in public and not worry about some deranged lunatic shooting me.

I can't believe anyone can possibly think someone deserves to get shot for talking to his kid at the movies.

20. Doesn't Cialella "know" you shouldn't carry a gun in your sweatpants?.?.?
Or had he not heard about the football player who shot himself in the leg from carrying a gun in his sweatpants?.?.?

Cialella, could have shot himself instead of the annoying movie talkers.

24. In FL, shooting a talker in a theater is justifiable; you just need a carry permit...
and if you're certified repub, well you can water board the offender before you shoot 'em.

41. A request for some one to take their crying baby out almost turned violent
A family brought couple of young kids to The Devil's Rejects. (When I'm looking for good quality entertainment for young children, Rob Zombie is the first name that leaps to my mind.)

After most of the people in the theater were completely fed up with the kids' crying and screaming, someone shouted out "PLEASE TAKE YOUR CHILD OUT OF THE THEATER!"

The man--I'm assuming the kids' father--stood up and yelled "Oh yeah? Make me motherfucker!" Someone else shouted "I'll help." Half a dozen men (including me) started moving toward the guy who was now hurrying to get his wife and kids out. About the same time the lights came on and managers and security got them out.

Everyone else missed like 15 minutes of the movie because of some inconsiderate jerk.
