Judge strikes down Child Online Protection Act

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070322/ap_on_hi_te/internet_blocking_8

"Perhaps we do the minors of this country harm if First Amendment protections, which they will with age inherit fully, are chipped away in the name of their protection," wrote Senior U.S. District Judge Lowell Reed Jr., who presided over a four-week trial last fall.

The law would have criminalized Web sites that allow children to access material deemed "harmful to minors" by "contemporary community standards." The sites would have been expected to require a credit card number or other proof of age. Penalties included a $50,000 fine and up to six months in prison.

3. People have all the tools necessary available to them
to protect their children online. Most notably, the "OFF" switch.
I don't need my morality legislated. I made sure my kids didn't see the stuff I objected to.

7. I agree 100%
There are plenty of ways to keep kids away from objectionable content, including one very very easy way.

8. Too many parents do not care to BE parents. And half of THEM are
willing to show that on "reality TV"!

9. Exactly.
I have some pretty entertaining and embarrassing personal crap I could hock for a few bucks.
Problem is, no amount of money can purchase the dignity you lost by making that few dollars.

5. Hope this stays "Struck down"
Insidious bs by the "Ooooh! Think of the children!" brigade.

An idiot law, constructed by idiots, right up there with the PATRIOT Act and DMCA.

" "Perhaps we do the minors of this country harm if First Amendment protections, which they will with age inherit fully, are chipped away in the name of their protection," wrote Senior U.S. District Judge Lowell Reed Jr., who presided over a four-week trial last fall." - One of the good guys who sees the far reaching ramifications of this type of nonsense.

6. Bill O'Reilly will somehow turn this around
Into a judge striking down something that helped keep molesters away from kids.
