56. You are so much
smarter and better than this shit.

It sometimes just isn't the right thing to do - to pick apart someone who, without any doing of their own, is thrust into the spot light like Bristol Palin and her infant.

That teen mother is fucked up and that is not something to make a mockery of. It is not the progressive, kind thing to do.

It is not the DU I like to see.

And I have always liked your posts... this is just over the top.

but then I got lazy and left them there..

I only ever put ONE person in ignore before..The loopy canadian girl who always said "vis a vis"..and never made sense in the 4000 threads a night she started..and then I felt guilty and took her off..

I wonder what ever happened to her:)

anyway.. the primaries were so vicious, and ridiculousm I finally had to start ignoring.. and then of course someone went to "that other place" and signed up as SoCalDem, and now google brings up a bunch of absolute SHIT that I would never agree with in a million years..:grr:

I wish I had thought to go there and sign up & then get banned so no one could use my name ...

5. Legacy DU'ers?
Edited on Tue Dec-30-08 09:23 PM by alphafemale
Is that what we are?

I don't know if you'd call it numbness but I do keep pinching myself to be sure I'm not dreaming.

That bleak, rainy, dreadful day eight years ago, when I got a glimpse of a banner and logged into a new website seems like a very long time past. We've gone through a lot together.

I am pretty low on post count, considering my "Legacy" status. But this place is dear to me. It's been a Touchstone at many times. During those days when * had a 90% approval rating and it was physically dangerous to speak otherwise this place helped keep my sanity.

On editing, the squabbling doesn't really bother me so much. It's happened here over various issues before, and it will happen again, but this is still a great place with the best minds and hearts on ALL the internets.

I certainly don't post as much as I did in the "old days", but I'm still here just about every damn day for the past 7+ years. Which is probably too bad -- I might have written The Great American Novel by now if I hadn't frittered away my time and energy arguing on the internets.

33. June 2001 here
Just the other day I was thinking and came to the realization that I've lost over 8 years of my life to this regime. I wonder what it would have been like to live those years without the shit of the maladministration. How much of my life would have been different, and then I realize it's actually been 14 years, not just 8: when congress went red for the last 6 years of Bill Clinton's terms, and very little in the way of progressive was passed, Clinton was impeached over one lie, and we had Newt, Coulter, and all the rest of those bastards crying for blood. Then 8 full years with the chimp, and now, we have just two years to prove ourselves until the next elections, when if we don't do what needs to be done, the reds will dominate again.

We should have impeached. We should have gave them back what they gave us in endless frustration, complete paralysis of our financial system, impeachment, and justice. It's hard not to feel angry or vengeance seeking, and even harder to believe that they're going to be conciliatory, because they won't be. I'll believe it when I see it. There is one good thing to come out of all this: many people in the country aren't the naive masses anymore--some people gained knowledge and won't be as lax to learn the truth and the facts anymore. Gone is the innocence we all started with, and gone is the idea that our elected officials really give a damn about what their constituents want, because they're going to do what they god-damned want to do, regardless.

93. It's the Overwhelming CORRUPTION and No One Held Accountable..that..
leads to the "Numbness." I never thought as an idealistic "War Baby" I'd ever see this kind of corruption and no matter how hard we tried..no one ever "really" listened. They gave "lip service" ...but they never heard us as if we were all on different pages of a book written for America's DOWNFALL... That's what makes me the most "numb, cold" and wondering.

60. Stephanie, I really like TominTib. He's cool.
Even if I sometimes disagree, he's a nice guy, and a pleasure to talk with.

I didn't check your profile before writing, but if you're Stephanie from NY, you rawk, and you have for a long time now.

Truthfully, I have to admit that I've been a "nanny" more than once, usually when people are just plain beating up on the kid of some Republican. If the kid chooses to make themselves the story, fine. If they're over 18, fine. When they're little (like Rick Santorum's little girl,) it makes me sick to read some of the crap. We wouldn't stand for it if it was written about Malia or Sasha Obama; why do we think a defenseless kid should get a world of crap because of who their parents are?

I really don't have an opinion about the subject du jour, other than the fact I'm completely disgusted that the young woman in question will probably most likely not get a high school diploma, let alone a college education, because she's now a pawn for her mother's ambition. IMHO, YMMV.

I think those who have been here for awhile eventually hit the wall. In my case, I just got sick and tired of writing, faxing, e-mailing, calling and meeting with my representatives, only to discover they don't give a shit what we all think on any subject. Be sure and contribute to their campaigns, though! I think the last straw for me was FISA.

I hope the New Year is wonderful for you and yours.
Julie

I still have doubts about "Ignore" function. I miss reading their screeds but, I felt that after Obama won...I didn't need any more "stress" because I wanted to have a few moments of happiness to savor it all before it fell apart in the Media...so ...it's not an easy choice, or maybe even the "best choice" to put folks on "Ignore." But, there are so many "evil do'ers"...sometimes it's the ONLY CHOICE, for sanity for some of us.

I don't know when I joined... sometime in 2001 I think (but I wish I could find out which month).

I just feel like I'm just going through the motion these days-- a cycle that stared when (IMHO) DU hit two specific deep troughs-- Andy's hospitalization and some of the reactions I read; and the Bev Harris debacle.

I was kind of hoping Obama would bring it back to another peak, but it hasn't happened yet.

But I'm in for the long haul.

102. Funny that I see posts in other threads about how this place is moving to the right
They could not be more wrong. This place is definitely moving towards the left, but in someways that I do not like. Lots of people here now are intolerant of other people views to the point they don't even care to convince them to see things the right way. Back in 2001, you could actually discuss a controversial issue on this site without it breaking down into a flame war. I felt that most people on here were on the same team. Nowadays not so much.

I was reading some old posts from 02 and 03 and people actually made OPs supporting Arnold over the dems, asking if being gay was a choice and saying Howard Dean was a blight upon the democratic party. Topics like that would get you flamed to hell nowadays. But back then people actually disagreed and explained why the disagreed without calling folks homophobes, bigots and trolls.

To disagree with you...I find DU moving towards the "hard right" and you see it moving towards the "left" but you can understand, I'm not trashing you for your opinion.

Maybe we can "move beyond?"

BTW...if you know anything about Howard Dean..he was a SAVIOR for Dem Party and not a "blight upon it" which is what you say in your post.

Cheers & Peace!

This is what I posted in my previous post:

" I was reading some old posts from 02 and 03 and people actually made OPs supporting Arnold over the dems, asking if being gay was a choice and saying Howard Dean was a blight upon the democratic party."

I said those posts were saying those things...Not that I agreed with them. I agree with you about Dean, he has been great.

Look back at some posts from 2002, there were many less than liberal ideas being discussed back then. Gay marriage was a topic that was 50/50 on this board. I disagreed with most of them.

And yeah, there was reasonable discussion, now its a contest to see who can be more outraged.

Cheers and Peace back at ya!

Edited on Wed Dec-31-08 11:05 PM by Crisco
But the difference between then and now is then, they would passionately defend their opinions. Now, it's all via drive-by.

After Joe Lieberman's crap, this became a very unfriendly place for Blue Dogs.

As for the flames you'd get for nuking Dean this past year ... for one thing, people who backed him in 2004 simply aren't going to put up with any shit now, because he's more or less been proven himself. And his 2004 detractors don't have as much reason to give any, since (above) and because he's currently not a threat to anyone's powerbase. If Dean does anything that scares them in the future, they'll be back.
