End of year a busy time for hospital delivery rooms
I don't care how the parents/doctors try to justify this...let nature take it's course and forget the extra tax money you may get back. One thing goes wrong and the baby ends up in NICU. I've seen it happen.
What also feeds into it is that the delivering docs want off for the holidays, it's amazing to see how "full" their schedules are with c sections the week before any given holiday (especially the winter holidays) and how empty they are when the holiday/week of the holidays arrive.

But every year, delivery rooms see a distinct uptick in business in the last days of December, said Dr. Melissa Bailey, an obstetrician at Baylor Medical Center-Frisco. "Tax planning is a lot of it for some people, and for some people, it has to do with the deductible on their insurance policies," she said.

And some are more than willing to wait past the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. "I've heard of people who want to have the first baby of the year at a certain hospital because they hear of all the attention that the first baby gets," Dr. Bailey said.

Ms. Thompson said the couple reacts by joking that it's actually a political statement. "We're Republicans," she said. "We tell them that we're doing this so the baby can be born during the Bush administration."

2. A doctor we knew in Kansas got very lucky he was not sued
his patient was induced early, had problems and ended up with a c-section.. This was pre ultrasound, and it ended up that she was not as far along as he thought she was..and she delivered a 4lb 8 oz baby girl.. he was very lucky that Mom & baby ended up okay..

his reason?

he was going to be out of town...and the kicker? it was vacation in Hawaii.. he was going for a month, so he "induced" his "ripe" patients..:grr:

9. A person I worked with had that done to her.
She was a young woman from Italy who was having her first child. She did not speak much English. The American doctor who treated her induced her because he was going on vacation. She had a miserable labor and was scared the whole time.

3. Is this the "New Year Baby" plan by stupid parents?
Which means, carefully timing the impregnation to occur during March so that the baby will be delivered on the stroke of midnight of New Years Day? All to get their kid's picture in the paper?

Couples DO stupid things like this. They have nothing going for it besides their genitalia and a calendar and a need for National Enquirer fame. And don't get me started about those who want drugs to delay or induce labor just for this nonsense; I might go nuclear about the potential for losing their baby on a need to hit a temporal target.

4. nope...these 'parents' would prefer
that the baby be born at 11:59 for the tax benefits and insurance money that they can save...it is nuts...and in some cases dangerous.

5. I would have.
Instead he was born at 1:40 am on 1/1. Induced, but it wasn't like the midwife had much of a choice.

I kept hoping for 11:50 pm, but no. Let's see ... tax deduction, or seeing wife and kid on the local news and in the paper? I'd go for the tax deduction, personally.

7. well, if there was no choice that is not an issue
you do what is right for the baby...would the tax deduction be nice? well, yeah...we've had two babies in NOV and it was a nice little boost to our tax numbers for the year...one of them was even induced, but as a procedure for the health of the mother and baby...not the clock...

6. It amazing how money motivates people

The thought of losing a few dollars makes them loose their perspective and do irrational things.
