INFORMATION FOR FLOWERS FOR ELIZABETH
Sorry for shouting..wanted to get everyone's attention. I just spoke with a "Ken" from Chapel Hill Florist (800-917-1001), right around the corner from the Edwards campaign. He said DUrs could contact them directly and they'll set aside everyones money into a DU pot, and then when we're done (by a date certain), they'll go out and get as many long stem roses for Elizabeth as we can afford...he also said we'd get a deal since it will no doubt be a lot.

Is this how you all want to handle this?

23. I agree with you...
but not only that--since this is a group DU effort, DUers should decide together how to demonstrate their affection for Elizabeth.

Like I said before, this seems to be a little too rushed for an adequate number of DUers to give their opinion.

They don't last very long. How about another type of nice bouquet? Also, we can do both. Set aside X amount for the bouquet, everything over that goes to cancer research donation.

Please guys, consider another type of flower!

complicates things a bit and will slow everything down.

DUers should decide together whether they want to send flowers or donate to a cancer research fund.

And I think rules state that you have to run any fundraisers through him first before you post about them.

158. The reason is so that DU'rs don't get scammed.
That's why it's a rule. I'm not accusing you of that, but you understand, right?

For example, someone could post an 800 number, collect credit card numbers or pay pal donations, etc, and then profit.

To prevent that, it's good general rule, to clear the process with Skinner (to verify destinations) and then go with it.

I'd appreciate any effort in DU's name being run before DUers first, to get their opinion.

And, as I said before, it would also seem proper to run this before Skinner--as the rules state.

There's no good reason why individuals who happen to post on the same message board can't call the same damn florist to do the same damn good deed!

Because of the Edwards financial situation Elizabeth could buy mountains of flowers. (And my guess would be that John will keep her in beautiful blooms- they probably already get regular (Weekly) flower deliveries. Not to mention all the friends and politicians who will now send flowers)

I am thinking it might be more meaningful to donate money to the American Cancer Society OR send flowers to cancer patients in the Chapel Hill area hospital in Elizabeth's name?

I think you definitely have a great idea here though and you can count me in for a donation.

I'm doing both, flowers and cancer society donation, in her name.

If that's what she wants to do.

I'm curious to know what is fueling this dissing of a damn fine idea! Up and down this thread are posts that are trying to take the wind out of another's sails... and for what? Jeebus H. Cripes on a Cracker!

Merely suggesting that money be raised to go to cancer research as opposed to flowers makes you a Negative Nellie!!

That's just silly. Everyone cares & wants to help... whats so negative???

75. There is a standing tradition here to send flowers
The OP, through the goodness of her heart, starts a thread to get it going... and is bombarded with a bunch of people telling her it would be better to do something else. Not silly at all. This is by definition, negative. Everyone cares and wants to help, so everyone should do what their hearts lead them to do. They should not hijack another's thread with their "better idea".

112. I agree. We have the opportunity to do something truly significant right now.
If we could get the admins to host a donation drive like the one they did over the holidays (for poverty/food banks), we could do so much more than just come up with a sizeable donation in Elizabeth's name. The visibility of it would raise awareness, not just for anybody stopping by the site, but for all of us who post here daily.

And while the idea of sending flowers is sweet, I just see it as wasteful and pointless. So sad, such a huge missed opportunity.

70. Please don't take my post as an assault on the OP.
I clearly stated that I was not trying to be negative. My intent is not to "dis" her.

Not everyone wants to put money into flowers that may not be seen & will quickly die- whereas a donation the the American Cancer Society or to Breast Cancer Research will get alot accomplished.

The OP should not take it so personally- it is a LOVELY idea and pretty much everyone has said they want to donate SOMETHING.

I think this is the best way to do it - call the florist directly and have them handle it. I hope they include vases.

We had some wonderful DUers take flowers to Helen Thomas a while back. They worked hard buying the flowers, finding vases, delivering, and organizing the flowers. Bless their hearts.

A donation, a new vacuum cleaner, a new broom - they're all nice (and you need them) - but there is nothing like roses.

152. I'll call in the AM
ourbluenation, don't get discouraged. There are ALWAYS people here who attack any idea.

BTW, if those who want to donate to some cause, organize it. Yes, you. Instead of bitching about what someone else is doing. Thank you very much.

You should start a new official "Roses for Elizabeth Edwards" thread. This thread is posed as a question - it needs to be firmly solid and clear that it is all decided, set up, and ready to roll.

Ken, who said thus far, it's less than $100.00.However, he said someone had called 2 minutes before I did.
C'mon, folks, I've been unemployed for over a year, but I've donated to the Edwards campaign, American Cancer Society as well as flowers, $20.08 for each of the three donations.

162. I just called and donated
he said it's up to $150. now...What is wrong with us that we can't do this for her? This is a tradition to show our appreciation...it's news worthy...and will show her that we put her in the highest esteem, just as we did for Barbara Boxer and Helen Thomas...who cares where Elizabeth wants us to donate, we can do that too, but this is for her and her alone, let's get on it....
