FOR ELIZABETH Donations/ find a family without insurance to donate to??
Edited on Thu Mar-22-07 12:23 PM by Carni
Sorry about that title--I had to cram as much as I could in there.

I have been seeing the threads about flowers and one of Elizabeth's comments stuck with me...she talked about all the people she meets in dire circumstances and referred to her own excellent medical care.

Would anyone be interested in trying to find a family in the Edward's area that maybe has a child that needs some type of cancer treatment that they cannot afford?

Or any type of treatment for that matter--I think that would be a wonderful cause in Elizabeth's tribute and it might just save a kid or a families finances.

Any one interested? And how would one go about doing this? Finding a family etc?

Just a thought (albeit a strange one!)

Edited for the horrendous typing.

1. .
That sounds like a fantastic idea. Would anyone know how to organize something like that?

2. I have no idea which is why I hoped someone here knew...
I did a quick google to see if maybe there was a child's story of that sort in NC but didn't find anything concrete.

I think if there were people interested in this a hospital would have to be contacted and brought into the fold to make sure we got a hold of a legit case etc

I have never had any experience in anything like this!

6. That's the thing I am not sure
I would think that financial divisions in hospital's would have that info but would they be able to give it out?

If this can't be done for this instance (I mean for E Edwards) maybe it's something that DU could do sometime--I mean so it would be legit with oversight.

With this many members even if people donated 5 bucks to such a cause
(voluntarily obviously) it could literally change lives.

There are a lot of families not eligible for medicaid with no insurance and they slip through the cracks (I know I just dealt with that! But NO I am not volunteering myself as the recipient lol)

This is something that has been kicking around in my head for quite a while and this morning Elizabeth Edward's comments brought it back to mind!

7. .
Contacting a hospital came to mind as well. The hospital wouldn't need to reveal the name of the patient but they would surely know about patients who can't pay their bills.
And just like for Valentine's Day, those who give would get something like a heart or could give out a heart. These kind of things usually work well.

8. Something like this would be great once a year
It doesn't look like this is going to fly for this occasion but I wonder if Skinner would object to doing something like this, sometime?

11. Many women cannot afford mammograms. National Breast Cancer Foundation helps them!

Why does the National Breast Cancer Foundation need my support?

http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/contribution/bb-index.html#theneed

It is with the generous support of contributors like you, making both small and large gifts,
that we are able to create designated programs for your communities. Most cancer organizations
use their funds for research, but the National Breast Cancer Foundation dedicates most of its
funds to saving lives through early detection.

Many women in America cannot afford mammograms. If you had to choose between
feeding your children and having a mammogram, which would you choose?
Like you, my first priority would also be to care for my family.
Battered and homeless shelters are filled with women who are desperate for help.
If you have no money, you have no money, especially for insurance.

The poor are not the only ones without insurance. Working poor women, those who have jobs
but cannot make ends meet, are finding themselves with a limited ability to take care of
their own health needs because they do not have insurance. A shocking report from The New
England Journal of Medicine came out just a few years ago stating that "women who have no
insurance have a 49% greater risk of dying from breast cancer than women who have insurance."

The National Breast Cancer Foundation continues to seek funding for mammography services for these women.
We have the team in place to target key cities and set up educational programs for needy women to provide
them with free mammograms.
We have a strong alliance with hospitals, mobile mammography centers, corporations,
associations, ministerial alliances, and women's organizations across the country.

Successful programs have proven our track record for helping women.

12. I work for a non-profit rehab hospital
We have a Special Needs Fund that accepts donations for people who cannot afford to pay for care.

I suggest contacting a NC hospital and speaking to their admitting office to get connected to the right department. Here it is the Development Office - but it may come under another dept. elsewhere
