December 29, 2008
As the less-than-positive reviews mount in response to Caroline Kennedy's weekend media blitz, another contender for Hillary Clinton's US Senate seat, Rep. Carolyn Maloney, has netted the support of a third women's group.
The National Women's Political Caucus announced today it sent a letter to Gov. David Paterson urging him to appoint Maloney to Clinton's seat, citing her "proven record of working well with legislative colleagues to pass significant legislation." Specifically, the NWPC mentioned Maloney's work on legislation geared toward helping women like the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Debbie Smith Act for processing DNA evidence and rape kits and the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act.
This is the third women's group to throw its support to Maloney since the game of jockeying for Clinton's seat began. Earlier this month, the National Organization for Women's PAC and the Feminist Majority PAC endorsed the congresswoman's non-campaign for Senate.
Maloney was initially way out in front of the pack in making clear her interest in Clinton's seat. She was the first to hire a consultant (Bill Lynch) - a step several others, including Kennedy, have now also taken - and was very open in discussing why she considered herself the most qualified candidate for the job. Since Kennedy formally confirmed her desire to succeed Clinton in the Senate and received such mixed reviews to her decidedly public non-campaign, Maloney has dialed back her efforts somewhat.
Unlike some of her Democratic colleagues, she has also taken pains not to criticize Kennedy, preferring instead to focus on her own accomplishments - but only if asked, of course. Maloney is still quietly trying to build support, as evidenced by this endorsement. But, like a number of other would-be Clinton replacements, she has chosen to sit back for a bit and watch to see whether the Kennedy juggernaut crashes and burns. If so, Maloney is hoping she'll be well-positioned to step into the breach.
