DEMS Say E-Mail Places BUSH's ROLE In FIRINGS At Center Of Subpoena Debate

Bush's 'role' in firings at center of subpoena debate

President's involvement in firings at center of subpoena debate
E-mails on attorneys’ firings could impact privilege case
By Susan Crabtree

March 22, 2007

As the White House prepares for a constitutional showdown over subpoenas of top administration aides to testify about the firings of U.S. attorneys, the viability of President Bush’s executive privilege argument may come down to the time-worn question: How much did the president know, and when did he know it?

Democratic sources say that investigators in Congress have taken note of a brief e-mail exchange, released by the administration Monday night, which touches on this topic. But the exchange raises more questions than it answers.

In an e-mail dated Nov. 15, 2006, Kyle Sampson, former chief of staff to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, asked then-White House Counsel Harriet Miers and her deputy, William Kelley, whether he had the green light to go forward with the firing plan.

Miers responded that she was “not sure whether this will be determined to require the boss’s attention.” Her e-mail ended with the words: “We will see. Thanks.”

Sampson, who resigned last week, responded with a critical question: “Who will determine whether whether this requires the President’s attention?”

16. Thank You
I have been reading DU almost everyday for the past 3 or 4 years. I figured the FBI would be looking into the fine and cool posters at DU (which I believe they did.) But now that I have entered politics, I am making a point to let the republican know I am here. In Bedford, Indiana the city has been under Republican control for the last 28years. I just finally decided I have had enough. Like I told the local reporter; I am entering the race with a free web page http://bedfordmayor08.tripod.com/ and $5.00 to open a savings account. And I will beat every republican and there money they put up. Because in the end, good always wins out. From Superman to Hitler...when the dust finally settles good always wins in the end." Republican's just never seem to care about anything but themselves. I am the only candidate in the race to have kids in the schools system ($120 avg per kid book rent fees, I have 3 children.) I am the only U.S. Army Vet. And the Republican nominee will most likely a 73 year old woman who is married to the past 5 term mayor. We are rated #3 in un-employment. But she has signs everywhere. I still believe I will win though. I have been doing door to door and getting a very good response. I firmly believe I will kick some republican ass this November.
P.S. Thank you for letting me vent....I have been waiting do do that for a while now :)

20. I lived in Indy for seven years.
And have been through Bedford many times. It's a pretty place, and the people are hard-working and decent. But the ultra-conservative culture is hard to break through. The education is sub-par, as in Missouri, and I think it makes people more susceptable to the old tactic of FEAR. Fear of outsiders. Fear of people with different colored skin. Homophobia. Fear of the Arts. It almost translates into actually a sort of fear of thinking for one's self.

You've got your work cut out for you. But you can come here and get support and rant, anytime you like. And I hope you will.

Good luck in your campaign. I believe that you will win!

7. You know, while were handing out subpoenas...
Perhaps we should look a little further back and wonder whether Bush (I mean, of course, Rove) had a direct hand in slipping in the Specter Provision.

I HOPE this gets addressed in the investigation.

12. I'm really confused.
Edited on Thu Mar-22-07 01:47 PM by yodermon
The USAs can ONLY be fired by the President. Not the AG or karl fucking rove.

So this whole "whether whether" this requires the President's attention is very mysterious to me - how could it NOT require his attn?
seeing as

He's the only one who can fire them???

Sorry to belabor the point, but wtf?

14. Yes, just another massive nuance of this whole fiasco
I think he can delegate his "presidential pleasure" to his underlings. Or at least, I'm sure he'll say he can.
