Need info on OTH (Other Than Honorable) discharges from the military...
Is there recent precedent in the military offering to upgrade a former soldiers' discharge to allow them to be reactivated for deployment?

The story about the 50 year old gentleman this week being reactivated for deployment got me wondering about what lengths the military may be taking in order to find bodies for overseas deployment.

Google is not yielding the responses that I am in search of.

Thanks, DU!

1. don't know if it's recent precedent - but they tried to con my son into accepting an upgrade for his
administrative separation - without mentioning that such an upgrade would make him eligible for being called back into service.
I convinced him that it was *not* worth it.

2. I think there is a time limit for the request to be made, but
google yielded many hits via "upgrade other than honorable discharge"

Results 1 - 10 of about 34,500 for upgrade other than honorable discharge. (0.21 seconds)

You might check with a recruiter via phone. Some of the military websites have a section to send questions to recruiters via email

3. if you upgrade from OTH, please note you *will* very likely get recalled back into service...
and not necessarily at the rate/rank you were prior to the discharge.

4. Please note that the OP asked the question, and a potential
source for an answer was provided.

Note also that your *will* suggests a sure thing, but following that with "very likely" softens it to a mere possibility.

Since you responded to my post, it appears that the "if you upgrade..." is personal, but it does not apply to me. Perhaps "if ONE upgrades..." would be more universal. One gathers that you are not fond of the military, but usnret88 does not mind it at all.

Peace and love.

5. hi usnret88 - i am actually quite fond of the military! I was born on Camp LeJeune to a career
Marine. Dad served from WWII through Vietnam. All four of his brothers and four of his five sisters served. My son also served (Navy). My negativity was spawned by recruiters who were less than honest and upfront when they contacted my son - not with the military life or personnel. I sometimes wonder if recruiting has been outsourced to non-military folk, or maybe it is just that the recruiters are under such severe pressure these days?

Sorry if I left you feeling that I did not respect military service. I believe it is a fine career filled with many good people.
