Support a Timetable for Withdrawal from Iraq

The House of Representatives is preparing to vote on legislation, called the Iraq Accountability Act, that calls for a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq, and ties that timetable to any new funding requested by the White House. With such measures, a timetable for ending the war and bringing the troops home could soon become U.S. law.

Congressional Republican loyalists to the war and to Bush fear the momentum of growing public disapproval of the war, and will try to block these plans. They claim that bringing the war to an end will escalate the violence, ignoring four years of rising violence. In fact just this week the U.S. commander in Iraq admitted that even with the recent troop surge, sectarian violence and civil strife in Iraq has increased.

Nearly seven in ten Americans want the war to end. It's time for the president to listen to the people.

3. you know, without being too cynical
I realize this particular bill would face a veto if it advanced to Bush's desk. Yet, it's passage will be seen by everyone, save the critics on our side, as a direct rebuke of Bush's occupation. It will also serve as a mirror of the Senate budget effort led by Sen. Robert Byrd which has a better chance of getting Bush's attention because it includes items he wants and items his republican enablers want.

That's the power of our majority in this political institution. We are the gatekeepers for money spent by the administration; not just for Iraq, but for a myriad of issues and concerns which interest the opposition and can compel them to bend on their obstruction. If this effort in the House fails, then the Senate will take their bite with the Byrd bill. If that Senate effort falters, they intend to confront Bush in the overall Defense budget.

You are more than correct to view this as another part of an ongoing fight to hold the Bush regime accountable.
