More Internet connections in China than the US?

I just pulled up the CIA factbook page for both China and the US and started comparing the statistics for them and us. It is amazing how similar we are in many ways but one of the numbers that stood out for me was internet connections. China has more than we, according to the webpage. Interesting.

1. They have a billion people, why would you think that would be less than us.

Probably India has more connections than we do.

2. Perhaps because many people live in poor, rural areas in both those countries.

4. Lack of hardline communications to rural areas mostly, but they have more telephones than us too

Way more cell phones.

3. Huh?

If China has 4 times more people than us, but we have similar Internet connection (approx 220 million), that sounds to me they are behind us by about 4 times?

5. China has over 600 million of the over 4 billion mobil subscribers
