Dad Accused of Dropping, Shaking Baby Due in Court

A Poway Marine facing felony child abuse charges was scheduled to be arraigned Friday.

Investigators said Cpl. James Charles repeatedly beat his 3-month-old-son, Owen. Owen's mother, Megan Charles, said she took Owen to Children's Hospital earlier this month because he didn't look well. Doctors reported the incident to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, and detectives eventually arrested the baby's father.

Investigators said Charles admitted dropping and shaking Owen more than 30 times.

Megan said James has not been the same since he returned from a deployment to Iraq.

2. May as well get used to it.
I'm a Vietnam vet and I know how damaged we were when we got back to the States. But the alcoholism, drug abuse, PTSD, and general emotional dysregulation we experienced was as nothing compared to what we will be seeing in the current crop of veterans. For one thing, most of us served only one tour; these guys have served multiple deployments. For another, they are seeing more of the horror brought about by their actions than we did. For a third, due to advances in medicine and more rapid medevac, these people are surviving injuries--particularly brain injuries--that would have killed people in any prior war.
