Kristol says Gaza invasion 'a favor for Obama'
David Edwards and Andrew McLemore
Published: Sunday January 4, 2009

Bill Kristol thinks that President-elect Barack Obama should be thankful for Israel's attack on Gaza.

"If you care about the peace process you should want Israel to embarrass and humiliate Hamas. That's the only chance -- there would be no peace process if Hamas were governing Gaza. That would be the worst thing for Obama. This is a favor for Obama if it de legitimizes and weakens Hamas," Kristol said.

11. You have stated "that which cannot be said." Israel has truly punked the President-elect. That's
why he should speak up, and show them who the fuck is boss.

26. What a truly bizarre post
Either you are suggesting that the American president should be a sort of colonial king of the Middle East, acting as 'boss' of everyone for their own supposed good (which is just how Bush acted, and see how that worked!); or you are making the truly vile suggestion that Israel somehow controls America and the American president.

I think Obama can and should try to set up and facilitate peace negotiations, but he can and should never be truly 'boss' outside America. And Israel is certainly not 'boss' and never was.

"...you should want Israel to embarrass and humiliate Hamas."

Kristol should read the international press to see who's being embarrassed, humiliated, and made pariah, by their actions in Gaza.

14. Do Israel pilots feel happy killing innocent women and children?
Saturday 27 December

I go to visit friends in the Block J neighbourhood in Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip. While I am in a friend's house, my phone rings. It's a friend from Gaza City, calling for a chat. Suddenly I hear the sound of an explosion at his end. At the same time I hear an explosion in Rafah too. Just outside, somewhere near. My friend says: "Fida, they are attacking nearby." I say: "They are attacking here too."

I run into the street and everybody is running, children and grown-ups, all looking to see if their relatives and friends are alive. It is the time for children to go to school for the second shift, after the first shift finishes at 11.30am.Naama is aged 13. This is what she tells me: "I was sitting in the classroom with my friends when the attack happened. We were scared and we ran out of our school. Our headmaster asked us to go home. We saw fire everywhere."

People are looking at the remains of a police station. There are still bodies under the wreckage. It is scary because the attack isn't over, and from where we are we can see an Israeli airplane attacking another police station.

At the hospital, I speak to a wounded police officer, aged 39. "We were at the police station," he said. "The Israeli planes came and suddenly the building collapsed on us. I saw four dead bodies near me. They were in pieces. Outside there were more bodies. Everyone was shouting. I lost consciousness and then found myself in hospital."

25. Kristol is an insane ideologue
And one point is: WILL the action 'delegitimize and weaken Hamas'? Seems to me that it's more likely to do the opposite. Polls have been suggesting that the Palestinians are pretty fed up with Hamas, and wouldn't vote for them again. Not surprising, as they're a crap government for their own people, even apart from the terrorist attacks. But a war tends to drive people (at least temporarily) to support their government. Hamas might well garner more Palestinian support from all this.

28. Obama: "If only the I/P situation were more violent and complex. That would be so much better."
Meanwhile, the world community: "Hamas seems pretty legit to me, what with their constant talk about how abused the people of Palestine are. Of course, if Israel were to launch a massive campaign of airstrikes and ground attacks resulting in the deaths of hundreds of innocents, and bomb the few smuggling tunnels by which Palestinians can get food and medicine through the year-long blockade, then that would convince us that Hamas's complaints are illegitimate and that we should only pay attention to the Israelis."
