Invasion a Monstrosity, Says UN Leader
Invasion a Monstrosity, Says UN Leader

by Ian Munro

NEW YORK - In an extraordinary outburst, the president of the United Nations General Assembly has branded Israel's ground offensive in Gaza a "monstrosity" and a marked failure for the UN.

Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, of Nicaragua, blasted the Israeli action on Saturday as the UN Security Council convened its third Gaza emergency session.

"I think it's a monstrosity; there's no other way to name it," Mr Brockmann said. "Once again, the world is watching in dismay the dysfunctionality of the Security Council."

His remarks were seen as putting a slight upon the United States, which again prevented the council from issuing an agreed statement on the crisis.

The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, lamented Israel's incursion after a week-long bombardment of Gaza that had already killed at least 460 people and injured thousands more.

Israel has said it is targeting Hamas militants and resources, but according to early estimates about one quarter of those killed were civilians.

17. We look, but we do not see. We hear, but we do not listen.
I think the information is out there for people who seek the truth. But it has to make you wonder what type of control structures and mechanisms are out there thats keeps this information from being broadcasted openly and honestly in our MSM.

Tin foil. Nope. I know what I know after years of observation. Our msm, for intent and purposes, is useless to the citizens of this country.

34. You're right exactly
The info is there for those who seek it, but it shouldn't have to be sought at all. The average US media-watcher knows more about Miley Cyrus' shoes than about the horror in Gaza. You'd think that some news of the carnage would just happen to leak into the mainstream US consciousness, but no!

2. Well Ban Ki-Moon can expect the sort of
swift-boating that greeted Kofi Annan.

Great to see the Sec Gen speaking out. Now he should condemn Bush and Olmert - one convicted criminal and the other who believes he can ride off into the Texas sunset.

21. Perhaps, but the "monstrosity" quote isn't from Ban Ki-Moon....
though the article's title cites "UN Leader." The title may be a little misleading, as many will think "UN Leader = Secretary General = Ban Ki-Moon."

31. It's even better than that. The president of the Assembly is a former priest,
liberation theologist and former Sandinista adviser during the Contra war. I hope Rayguns is WINDING in his grave.

18. Their reasoning was that Hamas probably wouldn't abide
by the resolution. I guess we'll never know now. How pathetic of an excuse.

http://www.truthout.org/010409Z

U.S. deputy ambassador Alejandro Wolff said the United States saw no prospect of Hamas abiding by last week's council call for an immediate end to the violence. Therefore, he said, a new statement at this time "would not be adhered to and would have no underpinning for success, would not do credit to the council."

5. UN chief condemns rocket fire
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the rocket fire towards Israel and called on Hamas to promise that the fire would cease immediately. Ban expressed concern over the situation in Gaza and the south, and said more violence would lead to needless civilian suffering.

They did not stop

Sorry, I ain't gonna be held responsible for the actions of "my" government when I was eight years old.

And yeah, I know he knows about dirty wars. Led one himself, didn't'ee? A happy place for a priest, dictating dirty politics. Sorry, I don't go in for theocracy, which is what he's always wanted. Liberation theology has always been a proving ground for theocrats. We see that as much today as we did back when I was a kid and he was leading his crusade to create a theocracy in Central America.

Edited on Sun Jan-04-09 03:02 PM by higher class
That imbecilic, idiotic decades long belief that killing is OK on an eye for an eye basis is now finally ended. Israel has decided to kill all the eyes.

Israel is beyond a state of me forgiving them. Ever. I condemn every U.S. politician who stands behind this massacre.

15. The UN is a worthless Political Body.
It has supported Hamas Terrorism for years.

Where was it's outrage at the constant reign of terror that Hamas has sent down on Israeli civilians.

Where was it's outrage at Egypt's blockage of its border with Gaza?

It's always been one sided and full of crap.

42. Re" reign of terror"
In 2008, a resident of NYC was 20 times more likely to be killed by a car while crossing the street than an Israeli being killed by a Hamas rocket.

disease. The long history of Palestinian oppression by the Israeli hawks is the monstrosity underpinning everything else.

32. What good would have that done anyway?
It's like saying "Stop" in a tinny voice to two brawlers about to get it on.

The only things that could've stopped Israel's invasion are sanctions (like that would've ever passed) or a direct military intervention (like anyone wants to do that either).

40. Slaughtering innocent people
With aid from our tax dollars. So not only do we bail out corporate criminals with our hard earned tax dollars but we also provide weapons for the killing and maiming of innocent people. If we Americans had any real decency we would be a million strong in front of the white house demanding an end to our tax dollars being used to kill, maim and terrorize innocent people.

The fact that we, as a nation, sit back and accept whatever our corrupt government tells us is shameful and disgusting.

peace
