LBN has all the I/P Discussion
you could ever want. Can these threads not get recommended and go to the greatest page?

10. Go where? LBN? They get moved, even if they are breaking news.
And no I/P thread can be recommended.

A game of post, run around and get recs, before the post is moved is just...well, silly.

Perhaps we need a WARS AND OTHER FIGHTING forum to go with GD and GDP.

11. There's a bunch in there now
They should not be moved from LBN and if they are, I'll join any effort to stop that.

13. Moderators taking a dinner break, perhaps?
I think apartheid with regard to those issues remains a feature here.

Pity people couldn't learn to discuss the issues a bit more civilly. There are arguments on both sides that don't get much of an airing because invective is more plentiful than frank discussion.

15. I don't know, but
let's get this aired "civilly", okay? I thought just about anything could be posted in LBN as long as it followed the time frame rules.

16. I agree with your view on this matter.
Unfortunately, I don't think the "franchise" here does.

28. Apparently, as long as there are no flame wars
and the time frame is followed, LBN news threads will not be locked. So if people want a place to recommend threads to the greatest, it would seem logical to me that a coordinated effort be made to keep flame wars out of LBN.

Nice chatting with you.

After all this could be the beginning of WWIII.

12. What we Are Doing, Ma'am, is What we Did During The Fighting In 2006
When in fairly quick succession there was an Israeli advance into Gaza, followed by the war in Lebanon.

Because of the scale and newsworthiness of the events, discussion of the current news is allowed in the upper forums. When these discussions, as they sometimes do, veer into general slanging about the entire Israel v. Palestine matter, they will be moved down to the I/P forum. Since fresh developments and posts will continue, this does not prevent discussion of the current events in the upper forums. Since discussion of this topic frequently becomes heated, we do keep an eye out for imflammatory statements, and comments that are simply flame-bait are removed, in the hopes of keeping the discussion on track. If it develops that a thread is simply over-run with flame-bait comments, we will lock it, or move it down to the I/P forum. On occasion, the O.P. starting a thread is itself flame-bait, and when that happens, it will be locked or removed.

In the I/P forum, a particular set of rules has been in place for many years. These rules are not really 'seperate', they are more or less codification of how the normal rules of the forum will be applied in detail in relation to this topic, which has proved particularly troublesome in the past. I would recommend persons who want to discuss this in the upper forum venture down to that topic forum and read the rules there.

14. That's fine, but LBN should be open
Too many threads are being moved that would not be moved for any other current event. I've asked Skinner regarding other issues about having a duplicate thread rule and was told that GD is a duplicate thread. I understand the whole I/P forum issue, but this is a current event and discussion should be allowed out of the dungeon somewhere. It's a terrible forum in general if we've got next to nothing on this crisis.

17. When They Are Moved, Ma'am, It is For The Reasons Indicated Above
The threads have either become general wrangles of the past rights and wrongs of the conflict, or over-run with imflammatory comments, or elements in the O.P. itself constituted flame-bait.

18. LBN is limited to article titles
and paragraphs directly from the articles, isn't that correct? Or, would that be an acceptable compromise to leaving I/P threads in LBN. You know I have no stake on either side of this, right? I see the points from all sides, on both the forum issues and the I/P issues.

21. People have Been Known To Add Comment, Ma'am....
And sometimes make immediate follow-ups that clarify intent. There are also some sources occasionally employed that may not pass muster, or the piece may be really one of analysis and background rather than news, though it uses a recent event for a 'hook'.

I can assure that we are doing everything we can, under the policy and rules of the site, to permit and promote discussion of the current events outside the dedicated forum while this remains a leading news item. As others have observed nearby, a leading problem is the propensity for invective, sometimes of startlingly vile character. Were there substantially less of this, we would not need to act nearly so often.

23. So, LBN I/P threads do stay
and are not immediately sent to the I/P forum, as posts in GD are, is that correct?

And when they become clear flame wars in LBN, they are simply locked, just like any other flame war, correct?

24. Not Quite, Ma'am
Posts on the topic in G.D. are not automatically locked or moved either. Since O.P.s in G.D. do not have to link to an article, it is true that a higher proportion of them are flame-bait from the start.

Some threads which get out of hand in L.B.N. are moved instead of locked, as they may be salvageable with 'professional' attention down there.

25. Perhaps the problem is the moving
As it pertains strictly to LBN, why not just apply the exact same rules to those posts. All strict news articles stay as long as they don't turn into flame wars. Flame wars are locked, the end.

GD, move them all to the I/P forum, as per the rules.

As long as sensible discussion and recommends are allowed on late breaking I/P issues, in LBN, there shouldn't be any complaints. Any reasonable complaints at least.

Perhaps the problem is coming from your attempts to be accommodating, instead of just following the rules as if it were any other news day.

26. Some Of The Moved News Items Remain Open In Their New Venue, Ma'am
Once cleaned up by the moderators who specialize in the issue.

We do try to be as accommodating, and as mild, as we can be.

As you clearly understand, we know we are going to have complaints no matter what course we take.

Let me close by saying I appreciate the opportunity you have provided here to do something towards clarifying this for members of our forum. I doubt everyone is satisfied, either with the explanation or the policy itself, but I have done the best I can.

27. Just trying to apply a mother's sensibility
Sometimes the more you try to please all the kids, the wilder the house becomes. Anyways, everybody is free to follow a new course, or stick to the flame wars, that's for sure.

Thanks for the nice discussion!

:hi:

19. wrangles
. . . there's a forgotten word.

"The souls of emperors and cobblers are cast in the same mould…. The same reason that makes us wrangle with a neighbour causes a war betwixt princes."
