John Edwards: "Thank You"
Thank You.

Elizabeth and I are so grateful for your prayers and wishes. Your support means a great deal to us during this difficult time.

As you may have heard, yesterday we found out that Elizabeth's breast cancer is back, but confined mainly to her bones. Although this isn't the news we wanted to hear, we are very optimistic. Having been through many struggles together in the past, we know that the key is to keep your head up, keep moving and be strong. At that's exactly what we intend to do.

Elizabeth and I have been married for nearly 30 years and we will be in this every step of the way together. We will keep a positive attitude and always look for the silver lining—that's what we do.

Although the cancer is no longer curable, it is treatable, and many patients in similar circumstances have lived full, normal lives. We expect nothing less for Elizabeth. She expects to do all the things next week that she did last week.

Our campaign goes on and it goes on strongly. We are so proud of the campaign we have run—a campaign based on ideas and reaching out to people. This campaign is not about me or Elizabeth—it's about all the people we have met these past few years and people like them all across America—people struggling with poverty; people worried about feeding and clothing their kids; people facing hardships overseas.

Both of us are committed to this campaign. We're committed to this cause and we're committed to changing this country we love so much.

Thank you again for your support and for standing with us.

John Edwards

3. Personally as a BC survivor I can not believe that the both of them
stood in front of reports and kept themselves "together" as well as they did...I would have fallen apart. I believe their strength and love for one another is something to envy. I remember when she was first diagnosed I sent her a card, and one to their oldest daughter. A few months later I received a hand written note from Mrs. Edwards...it's one of my most precious items. I only wish her and her family all the best.

4. I can't help but think what Newt did when his wife had cancer
that scum had an affair and served her divorce papers while she was in the hospital.

My prayers are with John, Elizabeth and their kids. :hearts:

6. I was just watching Hardball
and there was a sideshot of John looking at Elizabeth when she was talking...it was such a protective and loving look.
One that you just don't see everyday.
Although not by design, I think this is going to create a new dimension to his campaign.
Forget the guy you'd like to have a beer with, here is a REAL man.
This will resonate with EVERY man whose wife has undergone this and the sheer enormity of the diagnosis (as only they know).

27. Absolutely
You have touched on some RWN themes you are debunking here. Edwards is a man who understands what it means to have a woman "stand by her man". In this case, it is "stand by your spouse and your country". Why not!

There are many good candidates, but thanks for saying something in behalf of John and Elizabeth Edwards, who are obviously working towards getting our country back. But that is MHO.

22. I sent them an e-mail from the link...I'm sure they are overwhelmed
w/e-mail about now.

A couple of THANKS are due in this thread as well.....Thank you for posting this; Thank you all for showing your compassionate side; and a HUGE Thank You for reminding people w/this thread that women need to be checked fo BC. Cancer is an all encompassing killer, it cares not of the political postion of the victim, nor the religion, nor the race, nor anything else...it simply kills if allowed to.

GET CHECKED ON A REGULAR BASIS.....

Regarding getting checked for BC - BSE is also important; not all breast cancers show up in a mammogram.

exam if you're >45...Don't wait for some obscure sitution to arise. Mine was caught because I had the exam and something seemed amiss to the Doc. I had NO symptoms at all, just a routine exam. Now a simple blood test checks for proteins/antigens.

A colonoscopy is recommended as well if you're >50.

33. Men can get breast cancer too
I have known two men who had it. One is still a close friend of mine, (and a good Democrat, too). The other, unfortunately, lost his fight two years ago.;(

37. This is true....it is relatively rare, but it sure does happen...
This is one of the reasons people need to monitor their bodies for things that are "out of place" or "feel different". Most often it is nothing much to worry about, or some benign mass; but you don't want to hear something like, "if we caught this earlier, we could have saved you."

No longer curable but treatable.
That means that she's going to die soon.
I'm so sad, but staying positive is always good.

38. Please stop that!
It does not mean that she is going to die soon! She will be undergoing treatment as necessary, when necessary. She is in good spirits, she is vibrant, and other than living w/cancer, she is in very good health.

Elizabeth Edwards does not need anyone's pity; she needs support, encouragement, and positivity.

39. Not necessarily
Mrs. bluescribbler was diagnosed with malignant melanoma nine years ago. Since then, it metastasized to her lungs and breasts. She has been "incurable but treatable" for the past 5 years. Her disease is now considered to be medically stable, meaning that the tumors aren't growing or spreading, but also not shrinking or disappearing. Of course, her status could change at any time, but for now, she's doing pretty well. Her doctors are astounded. Just this past week, her primary care physician said that Mrs. bluescribbler had forced her to rethink everything she thought she knew about melanoma.

Another friend was "incurable but treatable" for more than 28 years. Unfortunately, it finally caught up with her about two years ago.

And, breast cancer is way more treatable than melanoma. There are many more options for Elizabeth Edwards than there are for Mrs. bluescribbler.
