Where To Stay Inside Yellowstone NP In September?
We really want to do do day hikes and see geysers, bison and the lake. We will pick more than one lodge.

1. Canyon Lodge
It is next to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, and is also centered in the park. It is equal distance to most of what you are looking for.

34. Make sure you stay at the lodge.
The cabins suck. If you end up in the cabins you can complain of mice and probably get a free room though.

Day Hikes
MOUNT WASHBURN TRAIL is a fairly easy hike that takes you to the top of a mountain. It was one of my favorite places to bike when I lived there.
tip: plan to go late in the day time it so you make it back to your car when the sunset is in full color.

AVALANCHE PEAK is another good hike a little harder though. Be prepared for scree. On top is a great place to rest for awhile. Watch out for marmots they will take your stuff. The last time I was up there I sat and watched a herd of elk across the valley as the protected their young.

If you fly fish I have some spots that defy logic.

I would also make sure to leave yourself enough time to go to Jackson. There are many great hikes and wildlife around there too.

If you make it to West Yellowstone stop at http://www.freeheelandwheel.com/index.html and rent a bike. Take a short jaunt around town or explore the fire roads just outside of town.

3. You might want to check shortly before you go...
to make sure the park is still there, though, given the current earthquake storm. :bounce:

worst is to be believed.

4. "The big yellow one"
Last time of I was there, I was a young teenager and we stayed in this big, beautiful, historic looking lodge.

I remember it well, but can't remember the name.

Anyone?

It's incredible inside. It also has/had some rustic cabins on the grounds.

7. Tent it!
If you really want to get a feel for the park, there are many beautiful back-country campsites which allow you to get away from the crowds a bit. Of course, all have canisters to put food in etc. to keep hungry bears from sharing your dinner.

Even for most camping spots, reservations are required.

YSNP is an amazing geographic gem, but the people factor can be overwhelming at times, unless you are a little ways off the beaten path.

Have fun! :hi:

So we are looking for nice comfy lodges. Also, I really don't want to cook on vacation.

27. I don't like "roughing it" anymore either
I used to spend weeks in tents and sleeping bags and didn't think a thing of it. Now..... Not so much. I find my tolerance for sleeping on the cold ground to be next to zero. My fishing buddy spoiled me when he bought a 30' travel trailer. Nothing like fishing in the morning and evening and taking a nap or watching a DVD during the heat of the day then settling down in a real bed that night.

OK I'm a wuss. :)

9. Here's a few tips on Yellowstone
Yellowstone is a very big park. If you stay on one side of the park and plan on seeing everything, you will spend most of your time driving. It's best to either pick a spot that's centralized, or plan on moving as you work your way through. All of the major lodges are incredible, if you're into lodges. Personally I spend all my waking moments somewhere else, so I'm always just looking for a bed and a shower, and getting out as cheaply as possible.

Don't plan on seeing all the major attractions. There are just too many of them. If you try and see them all, they will become redundant and/or you won't spend enough time to do them justice. Buy a good book on Yellowstone with lots of pictures, and see a few attractions that interest you the most. Save the rest for future trips.

If you want to see bison, bears, or wolves, do your homework on where are the best places to find them. They move around with the different seasons so some places are better than others at different times of the year.

If you have lots of time, make day trips to the Grand Tetons and/or Glacier. Glacier is a pretty good ways to the north, but it's my personal favorite for hiking. The lakes there are stunning. There aren't as many people. The Kayaking is incredible, especially in the finger lakes on the north west side of the park.

Have fun.

enjoying the magnificence of our greatest national treasure. If/when it does blow it won't matter if you're 1000 miles away. You're still screwed.

I have my secret underground bunker all stocked and ready to go! I'd tell you where it is, but then you'd all want to come, and pretty soon I'd be outside standing on a hilltop singing "Que Sera, Sera".

14. Reserve NOW! Very wise information
If the economy wasn't as bad as it is it would probably already be too late to book for September. When we stayed at Lake back in the mid-80s we reserved almost a year ahead.

12. Camp out at Norris Geyser basin
There is a campground there. At dusk, go down and hike around the Geyser Basin. I like it better than the area around Old Faithful. It also sees less traffic so that means more wild life. Check out Grand Prismatic Spring as well. There is a hike(I think to Fairy Falls) that will give you a view from above. This view here:

18. Any of the lodges or camp grounds are excellent choices if they are still
as well maintained as they were back when we visited in 1998. The restaurants are good and have a great atmosphere. Yellowstone also has one of the best laundromats I have ever seen. Also, if you are going in September, make it after Labor Day. Then the park isn't as crowded, and the wild life is getting ready for winter so they are more visible. If you are camping, pack in what you need because the stores are very expensive.

20. Jackson Lake Lodge
It gets less traffic than Yellowstone lodges and there's nothing like it in the morning and evening for the views and wildlife. That way you'll have access to hiking in both parks.
