2. Twenty years ago i was working in a bookstore in a downtown

mall in Nebraska. A big suburban mall opened up a couple miles down the road and the plethora of shops and easy parking made for fatal competition.

So how did the downtown mall compete? Did it expand its hours, use creative advertising, bring in new unique specialty shops to draw in customers?

They cut operational hours to reduce their overhead, thus 'saving' money. Shorter hours meant fewer customers. The anchor stores abandoned the mall. In a year the building closed.

It's the American way of business.
