How can I like a girl who supports the War in Iraq?
So my English class was having a casual discussion about Bush and the War. In my class, there's a very pretty girl who I know, but not very well. Like I said, she's pretty, but not in a slutty or hot but dumb way. Genuinely pretty. She's always seemed very nice and pretty smart too. Long story short, I was kinda interested in her.

So originally there were just these 2 people sharing their opposing views, but naturally I jumped in shortly after, and pretty soon a lot of people were discussing the war. The girl didn't say much, but she did say something that led me to belive she was for it, and so I asked her. Her response was "I'm already an outsider because I like the Giants, so I'd rather not get too involved here."

:banghead: :argh: Granted, I don't know her views on any other issues, but how can anyone still support this shit? Why?!

1. perhaps her family has been staunchly republican?
Sometimes that brainwashing goes deep and for years, and passed like a bad gene from one family member to the next, until no one knows why they even vote republican (kinda like my own family... of course I'm the only democrat, I'm the only insane one!)

30. Who cares. really...
In the grand scheme of things, it's pretty worthless on its face that she may not hold the same political ideology as you or maybe she does, but just not as strongly.

It might hint to other, less compatible characteristics, but in all seriousness, decent people are decent people no matter what the dogmatic purists would say.

The great quest in life is to find someone who can make you happy. You sound young enough to be able to avoid starting down the path of inconsequential disqualifications of perfectly fine people for perfectly inane reasons. Yes, it's a big issue now, but this too shall pass.

There's a reason chicken little never got laid.

41. I'm with you...this is such an important issue
I cannot imagine being involved with someone who thought this was okay. I mean, when I thought there were mushroom clouds I supported the war too. But after all that has come out, there is NO WAY that anyone with half a brain, or half a heart, can still support this immoral, horrible disaster.

She is of the 28% - the real Kool-Aid drinkers. Stay away and find a nice, smart, liberal girl. You will also have a more interesting life with a Democratic woman, then with a woman who cannot think critically.

17. Yeah that's true. I tend to be pretty good at telling what kind of people
are liberals or conservatives or independents, and from the times I talked to her I got the impression her views would be pretty close to mine. Maybe I was wrong.

6. In this order:
Find out where she worships, then find out if her father is an autocratic parent. Kids often repeat the opinions of their elders, especially if they haven't been allowed to think for themselves.

9. Perhaps she hasn't been exposed to other view points ....
You referred to her as a "girl" ... so I am assuming she is young (late teens, possibly early 20's). Family and community influences may still be very strong.

Try engaging her 1:1 find out what her views are and what led her to those views. Perhaps with the introduction of a different view point, presented with facts and well thought conclusions she may at least reconsider her position.

12. HAHA! Think poor Britney Spears
When she's on stage in trashy clothes and singing bubblegum pop, she's a goddess. As soon as she opens her mouth to talk, she's gotta kill the fantasy.

She gives blondes a bad name.

15. Politics aren't everything, but you gotta draw the line somewhere.
My wife is a conservative Republican, which is okay with me; I mean, I wish she were a liberal Dem, but I don't love her any less. But at least she is against the war and against B*sh. If she was a pro-war, Bush-worshipping moon-bat, I don't know what I'd do...

14. She's obviously not "pretty smart" if she supports the war in Iraq.
But you might try giving (or loaning) her Thomas Ricks' "Fiasco" - if she still supports the war after she's read that book, you will know that she is beyond hope.

19. I'm gonna get killed on this but here goes:
Listen pal, if she can't lick her eyebrows, find another girl. I did.

I used to date a Republican during the 80's...for years. I remember her happiness when Reagan was elected but rationalized that theings were so bad under Carter that it was to be expected in America. This rationalization went on for way too long. I've found over the years that, objectively, the most appealing females in my practice have good politics. I always tell them to make sure they find someone like-minded. They appreciate the input b/c they're unsure as to how important it is. I tell them: Very important. Imagine if you were married to a Bushie during the recount in 2000. When they make a face I say that that's how you'd feel every day.

As long as you can segway it properly and you aren't judgmental (and I see no problem with you telling her you can't understand why anyone would support this misadventure) ... she probably has Bushbot parents is my guess

23. LOL, reminds me of my daughter...
In 7th grade she had a huge crush a boy, until she found out one day that he was a Bush supporter. End of crush.

I am married to a Republican, but he is far from a Bush supporter or Iraq war supporter. We share the same views on this, which is important to me. I love him very much and that's based on many more things that his political views, but I don't think I could respect someone who thought this war was a good thing.

24. Lots of married people support the opposite party, but this
president is such an extreme example, I'd have my doubts. But she is young and can change (not to say that she will).

You're focusing on the fact that she's pretty. That will get you in a heap of trouble, my friend. Its nice, but substance is much more important.

26. Dude, she is passive aggressive -plus, you are thinking with the wrong head
nuff said., you marry her and fight all your life-or end up divorced.
becasue that kind of fundamental value diference spills over into all area of your lives.

The fact she made an oblique statement in support of the war, then said she didnt want to discuss it, should tip you off that she's also passive agressive-which is another crazy maker.

give her up now.

29. My boyfriend is one of the last diehard Bush supporters I know.
We like to argue about it, and we make bets over elections and votes. It doesn't really affect our relationship too much, although he was pretty moody in early November:7 . Leave peoples politics out of your criteria for friendship, you will be much happier for it.

34. It can be hard to get into politics in a hostile surrounding.
Her views might not match up with yours, but it doesn't sound like she said enough for you to be totally sure what she believes. I went to a somewhat conservative college, and if I wasn't in the mood for politics I would just avoid the subject. She might be doing the same.

Even if she does support the war, don't let that stop you from being friends with someone. I have friends all over the political spectrum and their beliefs don't get into the way of my liking them. Besides, if you like arguing politics it's good to have some practice dummies to test yourself on.

Maybe she has family serving overseas.

Maybe her family is conservative and she has limited exposure to other political thoughts.

If you want to have a relationship, engage her on this topic and others. No reason to write her off completely.
