10,000 calls per hour crash NY unemployment system.
The state's unemployment insurance claims systems crashed today after more than 10,000 people were calling it every hour.

Both the telephone claims center and online claims system shut down because of the high volume.

The Department of Labor, which operates the systems, said its technical staff its trying to make the phone and online claims systems operational as soon as possible. The department said that unemployment insurance claims for the week can be filed as late as Sunday, so there is still time.

2. OMG!! They might actually have to HIRE someone to do it!
Nawww... they'll farm the job out to some off-shore company. Business as usual.

4. I understand that unemployment is now a federal program.
The jobs apparently are not federal. I wonder if NY only has one call center?

5. I think they did recently hire more phone workers.
That volume was just to much for the computers to handle.

6. No doubt some of the calls were from the people I worked with
two months ago. Last Wednesday was the final day for the folks in my department. Many held out for the eight weeks severance pay they were getting, I was only eligible for four weeks worth, so I ditched that for a relatively secure part time job with a utility company. Better half a loaf that will continue than three quarters of a loaf that will be dead in nine months.
