"NOW" we want an immediate cease fire?
Rice in New York to discuss Gaza ceasefire

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice flew to New York on Tuesday to discuss with key powers how to get a ceasefire in Gaza that the United States says must be durable, sustainable and indefinite.

Rice was to meet foreign ministers gathering for a United Nations Security Council meetings on ending the Israeli offensive launched last month with the stated aim of stopping Palestinian rocket attacks on civilians in southern Israel.

More than 600 Palestinians have been killed and at least 2,700 wounded since Israel began its campaign in Gaza, which is controlled by the Hamas Islamist group. Nine Israelis, including three civilians hit by rocket fire, have died.

"We would like an immediate ceasefire, absolutely, an immediate ceasefire that is durable and sustainable and non-time-limited," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters at his daily briefing.

While some of the United States' allies in Europe and in the Arab world have called for an immediate ceasefire, the United States has tended to steer away from the phrase and to stress that any cessation must be durable and indefinite.

1. I bet this is because of the attacks on UN targets
Israel seems to be able to get away with one of those in a given day, but this time they did 4.

2. Israel wanted to extend the cease-fire
Hamas didn't. In fairness. Of course, in further fairness, to the Palestinians, the cease-fire means an indefinite seige, which Israel won't negotiate on. We need UN peacekeepers in there.

4. Extend what cease fire? I wasn't aware there's been one.
And yes, someone with a cooler head both sides will listen to needs to get in there. If they're bombing UN 'free' zones, I don't know that they'd listen to peacekeepers.

5. A 6 month cease-fire
Yes. That's what happened. The date for the cease-fire ended, so Israel attacked. But Israel had closed roads into Gaza, leaving the people stranded so they smuggled in supplies through various tunnels. And weapons. Israel attacked the tunnels, Gaza sent rockets over. Cyclical. Who knows what started what, I can't keep track and honestly don't even care. They're both guilty.

As to UN peacekeepers, I mean a massive number. Go through and start rounding up weapons. Send the Israeli military home, all of it. Full humanitarian operation. Biggest one in the world's history. Gaza and the West Bank. I am sick of this shit.

6. Oh, 'that' cease fire. I thought you meant one more current.
I am also sick of this, sick of seeing all the death. Hasn't the world had enough?
