I mean, that's essentially what it is every night, isn't it? Illegal immigration this, illegal immigration that, blah blah blah...

This guy is beginning to spread xenophobia to a larger audience than Limbaugh...

with the Rio Grande drying up, and not reaching the Gulf of Mexico, sometimes several years in a row, Wetback may become an obsolete pejorative.

4. That's a little uncalled for.
I completely disagree with him on his immigration policy. However, I do respect the guy because it seems to me at least from what I have seen of the show when he says something he actually believes in it instead of just going where ever the wind blows. He was virtually the only one reporting about election fraud and the problem with evoting machines, he stands up to big corporations, and he doesn't seem too happy with the republicans right now. But yes, it has gotten to the point where it makes it virtually impossible for me to watch him sine all you have been hearing about lately is immigration this, mexicans that.

especially in central america including Mexico:

I don't see how pointing that out is racist. Is it bullshit, maybe. Maleria is not common along the US/Mexico border; however, I'm sure not all illegal immigrants come from border towns.

21. Are you kidding me?
Why do so many smart people around here act like such jackasses when they don't agree with someone. I'm a racist because I point out what the CDC points out, that mexico and other central american countries are prone to malaria infections? These infections don't show up for up to 7 days, enough time to come into the united stats. This disease then spreads. I'm a immigrant, a white immigrant. And guess what, they checked me for diseases too when I came into this country. But what do I know, I'm just a racist. :eyes:

20. Allegations of uncleanlliness and pestilence are standard racist fare.
They were made about Native Americans, and then they were made about every group of immigrants to this country.

Dobbs's allegations were baseless unless you are counting racism or nativism.

people do not have access to the best medical care. Which is why, in the US:

"The toll continues to be greatest among minority and foreign-born individuals, who consistently have higher rates of TB disease."

And as for Mexicans:

"In 2004, for the first time, there were more cases of TB among Hispanics than any other ethnic group."

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/medicalnews.php?newsid=21486

You shouldn't confuse availability of care to quality. Other countries may have more universal care, but it isn't as good. I say this as a world traveler and health-obsessed reader.

Disease is hand-in-hand with poverty. That's why Mexicans want to come here in the first place eh? I guess, though, that when you have a static population diseases can be gradually reduced even within poor areas, but immigration is dynamic so whatever health issues they bring slips into populations whose immune systems aren't ready to fight these diseases anymore, so it's a problem.

If we could get some real reform, where no one would have to sneak in or be a quasi-slave in a factory living an almost completely anonymous life, then it wouldn't be so much an issue I think. As long as they're treated as imported property by companies, things will be bad for everyone.

23. It was months ago
But stupidity like that makes an impression.

Oooh, here's the transcripts:

DOBBS: And the government of Hugo Chavez and Venezuela may be aiding and abetting illegal aliens and possibly radical Islamist terrorists trying to enter this country. A special report on that. ...

DOBBS: The United States is warning tonight that Venezuela is now actively fueling this nation's illegal immigration crisis. With the help of Fidel Castro's Cuba, Venezuela's counterfeit document industry could also be helping potential radical Islamist terrorists gain entry into this country. Bill Tucker reports.

BILL TUCKER, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Terrorist groups like al Qaeda, Hamas and Hezbollah may be no further away than 1,400 miles from Florida, with the front door to America open in Venezuela."

So scary!

"DOBBS: And Chavez actually expressly endorsed Islamist terrorism. He answered something the president said about extremists during 9/11 and Hezbollah and so forth. And Chavez said we're not extremists. We are just standing up to the imperialist hegemons. So this is an explicit endorsement of our deadliest enemies.

And this from Feb 1, 2007 - he just keeps going and going...

"DOBBS: And are radical Islamist terrorists trying to establish a base in Venezuela through which it might attack the United States?

New concerns tonight that radical Islamists could use Venezuela as a base in this hemisphere. U.S. officials say Hezbollah could establish a base in Venezuela as Iran forms an alliance with Venezuela's Hugo Chavez.

Christine Romans has the report.

CHRISTINE ROMANS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice over): Growing concerns that the close ties between Iran and Venezuela provide a new front for Hezbollah in America's back yard. A U.S. counterterrorism official says the conditions and links are there for Hezbollah to operate in Venezuela, citing Hugo Chavez's growing ties with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a major sponsor of Hezbollah, and Venezuela's near total lack of cooperation on counterterrorism.

ROMANS: As the ties deepen between Ahmadinejad and Chavez, Chavez emerges as an anti-American hero in Hezbollah rallies in the streets of Lebanon, where his picture is proudly waived. And Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah has called Chavez a great man -- Lou.

DOBBS: And U.S. policy response?

ROMANS: The U.S. is concerned. They don't see Venezuela as a central hub yet for terrorism activities in our back yard, but they say, that it is "disconcerting and dangerous" the trend we're seeing in Venezuela."

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0702/01/ldt.01.html

They never have, you know, proof. Dobbs just keeps airing these "concerns" and "questions", about how Chavez just might be behind those nasty Hizbollah terrorists. Because he figures terrorists are bad, and Latin Americans are bad, and they MUST somehow be connected.

That was insulting and demeaning in the fifties, well before political correctness was in style. The Search link on the SPLC site for "Lou Dobbs": http://www.splcenter.org/search/s-query.html?tx0=Lou+Dobbs&op0=%2B&fl0=&ty0=w&col=splcall&ht=0&qp=&qt=&qs=&qc=&pw=100%25&la=en&qm=0&st=1&oq=&rq=0&ql=a&si=0&x=11&y=7
These doofuses (doofi?) have their Keystone Kop side, but the Brownshirts also started out with their stoopidity on display, not taken seriously.

In the links at the bottom of this, the good people of Vermont ran the ijits out of a town and the Minutemen got lost in the woods and inadvertantly became illegal aliens themselves when they stumbled across the U.S./Canadian border. They were up there (all FOUR of them) to demonstrate that they were NOT being discriminatory JUST for the SOUTHERN border (yeah, right).

Then, their doofiness continued. They were building a 10-miles fence in AZ on private property. Univision had cameras there, did the news professional gig of interviewing the token Hispanic leader of the MM (Al GARZA), and then the camera panned over to a stack of concrete mix, the bags all showing the logo, "MEZLA CONCRETO MEXICANO"!!!1 That was PRICELESS!!1

As I say, they would be funny, but...

Broken Record
Lou Dobbs' daily 'Broken Borders' CNN segment has focused on immigration for years.

But there's one issue Dobbs just won't take on.

By Heidi Beirich and Mark Potok

.... For more than two years now, Dobbs has served up a populist approach to immigration on nightly segments of his newscast entitled "Broken Borders." He has relentlessly covered the issue, although hardly from a traditional news perspective -- Dobbs favors clamping down on illegal immigration, and his "reporting" never fails to make that clear. He has covered the same issues, and the same anti-immigration leaders, time after time after time. In recent months, Dobbs has run countless upbeat reports on the "citizen border patrols" that have sprung up around the country since last April's Minuteman Project, a paramilitary effort to seal the Arizona border.

But there's one thing Lou Dobbs won't do. No matter what others report about the movement, Dobbs has failed to present mounting and persistent evidence of anti-Hispanic racism in anti-immigration groups and citizen border patrols. ....

Border Patrol chief doesn’t want Minutemen near agents (Laredo, Texas)

LAREDO MORNING TIMES ^ | 08/24/2006 | MIGUEL TIMOSHENKOV

The head of the Border Patrol said Wednesday he doesn’t want members of the Minuteman Project working near his agents when they come to the Laredo area next month. The civilian group, which reports illegal immigrants to immigration authorities, is expected to start patrolling the border in the Laredo area on Sept. 11 and continue through Nov. 7.

Acting Chief Patrol Agent Reynaldo Garza of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Laredo Sector said he can’t prevent the civilians from coming to Laredo, but said they won’t be allowed to interfere with official business. ....

Esquivel said that if U.S. citizens should have any trouble with a member of the Minuteman Project, he or she should call the sheriff’s department or other law enforcement authority.

State Rep. Richard Raymond deplored the group’s plan to come to Laredo.

“They don’t have anything to do with this community,” Raymond said. “Here, we reject the racism they practice.” ....

Wonkette: if the Border Patrol is short handed, why not call out the Minutemen? You know, the more-bark-than-bite nationalist “movement” that, according to the ACLU and the Southern Poverty Law Center, Jerry Seper and the Washington Times largely invented out of the ether? Mind you, we’re not complaining. We’re big fans of making mountains out of molehills...

Anti-Immigration Movement

Newspapers Inflated Minuteman Numbers

, Report Finds

Moon's paper and the Minutemen

The report, "Creating the Minutemen," is based on an American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) analysis of 581 articles and editorials printed in major U.S. newspapers between January 2005 and February 2006. The ACLU has been highly critical of the Minutemen, and ACLU volunteers closely monitored the group.

The first of those articles, "Volunteers Set to Monitor Border Crossings," by Jerry Seper of the hard-right Washington Times, reported that 240 volunteers had signed up. By early March, Seper was reporting that the number of volunteers had "more than tripled," came from every state, and included 16 pilots with aircraft.

During the last two weeks of March 2005, the media hype shifted into overdrive. Fifteen journalists reported the Minuteman Project had signed up "at least 1,000 volunteers." The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin ran a March 23, 2005, article headlined "2,000 volunteers expected for Minuteman Project."

35. The working class shouldn't fall for Dobbs' demagoguery
His main job is to channel rising popular anger over ever-deepening attacks on the working class by the elites into xenophobic and reactionary channels. Dobbs has scapegoated immigrants for the woes of the working class while obscuring the role played by people of HIS class - the super-wealthy, CEOs, parasitic mega-investors, war-mongers, right wing politicians and the media. This game of blaming immigrants for everything wrong under the sun is hardly new, it's been going on for a couple of centuries now.
