If you run over a notorious mobster's son, you might want to make yourself disappear before someone does that for you:

Favara was arriving home from work on March 18, 1980, when Gotti's son Frank, riding a minibike, darted in front of his car. The driver told police he was momentarily blinded by the sun and did not see the boy.

The crash was ruled an accident by police, but Favara was subjected to death threats and harassment for months. His car was stolen and later smeared with the word "murderer," and he was threatened by Gotti's bat-wielding wife when he tried to apologize.

However, he ignored suggestions that he should move away.

Instead, Favara vanished. Twenty nine years later, we find out that he wound up dissolved in a barrel of acid.

4. If we are talking the head of one of the five NY mafia families,

one should try and disappear. Regardless of the fairness of the situation, Favara was begging to get whacked. Favara, by not moving, was doing far more to Gotti than just being the cause of his son's death. All mobsters wield power through fear, intimidation and violence not only directed at their innocent victims, but also their own crews and criminal peers. In Gotti's world, he was almost required to kill Favara because he did not run or eventually be deposed himself. Again, I am not trying to mitigate the brutal murder of an innocent man, I am simply explaining the cold hard truth of this life. I highly doubt that Favara was unaware of the danger of he was in.

It's bullshit, but was a common sentiment in my white working class Queens neighborhood when i was growing up. By the way, we used to get into little beefs with Gotti's other kid, who went to Saint Francis Prep if I remember correctly - a real dick, in any case. This is before the teflon Don got put away. My neighborhood was overrun with idiot wiseguys and various remnants of the old crews. The smart ones got into legal business before the hammer really came down in the late 80's, but the Mafia mentality was part and parcel of my childhood given the geography and demographics of my neighborhood.

People don't believe it when I tell them that watching The Sopranos is like Old Home Week for me. Except the guys I grew up around weren't nearly as articulate. Or interesting. They had their moments, though. After all these years, I find myself mostly thinking of them with affection.

But, I have wondered about this, and maybe you can help me: a few years ago, A&E (I think) had a reality show called (I think) "Growing Up Gotti," featuring Victoria Gotti and her family.

Now, why did her sons use the surname Gotti? They should have had their father's name, right? I can understand Victoria taking her maiden name back after her marriage broke up, but where did the sons get the Gotti name?

I hate that I wonder about crap like this..................

Officially they carry both their mother's and father's name...Gotti Agnello. They shorten it to Gotti for acting credits since it's the more recognizable of the two.

I'm only semi-ashamed to say I loved that trashy show too. After that first episode where she gets matched up with the nice bald guy who just blunders around in shock, I was hooked!
