Michael Collins

SNIP

While party affiliation plays a role, the criteria for the job are a distinguished career in medicine and a strong interest in assuring the public well being. The office is typically occupied by a physician with a strong background in public health.

Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, MD, appointed by Pres. Reagan in 1981, was a controversial choice for the position due to his outspoken opposition to abortion. By presidential request, Koop began a study of HIV AIDS at the start of 1986, wrote a report, and arranged for delivery to 107 million homes by the end of the year. It was an accurate, honest, assessment of the risks of AIDS without any judgment as to the causes. He knew the science and spoke out forcefully. He did this over the objections of Reagan loyalists who wanted to avoid the topic and regularly sought to have Koop fired.

Gupta is both absent any discernible political ideology and clearly lacks the traditional qualifications for the position of Surgeon General. This fits nicely into the virtual cabinet model. He looks good on television and corporate America finds him "easy to dance to."

In addition, Gupta earned his corporate media spurs with his "hit job" on Michael Moore's powerful and popular film, "Sicko" which showed the inadequacies of our health care delivery system.

21. Some genius doctor that will back down the White House for breakfast
Edited on Fri Jan-09-09 02:09 PM by autorank
C. Everett Koop, MD

Koop in his uniform for the public health service. They'd worn
uniforms before him but the custom had drifted off. He thought
it was a good idea and looked like an Admiral (little Ahab look).
It was a hit and he helped restore the doctors to their rightful
place of respect.

Will Sanjay wear the uniform? Will he look this good;)

Very intimidating intellectually and physically and an honest
decent man who cared about the people. He got in and wouldn't
leave because he knew that the next pick would be a loser, given
what he'd done across the board. He knew hot to handle Reagan,
because that's the only way he stayed in his position. The rest
of the WH true believers just hated him.

I thought, I'm in for a butt kicking ... but your kind advice will be considered. I'm looking
at some re-education / rehabilitation wilderness programs where I can'work on that "go along to
get along."

But before that, I'm hoping to have the initiative to go see the real "boss," Bruce for free.

Now here's a guy that I like. Crushed the usurper in the north

15. Celebrity counts for something.
But I'm not sure what. I'm sure Sanjay Gupta will look great in his uniform; how many stars does it bear?

Among the many benefits of not being a teevee watcher is having no idea who Gupta is. Why choose this fellow whose career in medicine seems to take backseat to celebrity?

The only possible explanation is Obama knows something we don't yet know. Some fearsome virus is about to infect North America. Fighting the pandemic will require martial law and lethal force to prevent the spread. Gupta is a familiar face whose broadcasts will comfort and calm the frightened public cowering in their homes, or shot down in the streets when hunger drives them out into daylight. What's that Will Smith movie about the virus that turns us all into critters? Like that.

16. you know, I'm REALLY getting disgusted with this meme
"The only possible explanation is Obama knows something we don't yet know."

To some of the more rabid bots here, it has become a mantra. And it smacks totally of the same sort of blinkered koolaid-imbibing crap we saw (and mocked) from the RW nutbags.

Quite frankly, it terrifies me to think that Democrats and progressives are taking up the insanity of the right, wrapping themselves in it and acting like it's OKAY to do now!

I guess the security blanket of a blindfold, gag and earplugs are OKAY as long as they are BLUE?

Gupta is a corporate shill. He IS the face of CORPORATE MEDICINE and CORPORATE DEATHCARE in this country. He WILL act as the soft-spoken mouthpiece for the companies that will once again slam the american consumer onto the ground, and put it's heel on american consumers necks -- all to PROTECT PROFIT MARGINS.

That's NOT what the Surgeon General is supposed to be about.

MVSedano. I read your message carefully to make sure I understood your position, which was actually quite clear. "Gupta is a corporate shill," makes the point. This was irony. Sedano makes me look moderate;) When he's not being subtle, though, he can cuss like a ... soldier. But when he's being ironic, he's comical in his opaqueness...or something like that. But he doesn't need me making excuses. He was a student of the famous John Arbuthnot who wrote the classic, "The Art of Political Lying." He's somewhat older than I but we did share an inspirational professor, Dr. Dimento

25. IMO the position is tantamount to a game show host
tapped to sell Obama's healthcare plan. Gupta's dust-up with Moore is a red herring. It's the healthcare plan itself that is the problem.
