and couldn't get them. Now Waxman is the Chair and he can begin the investigations he was trying to start for a couple of years. He might even be able to go after Karl Rove and others that Fitz couldn't touch. :D

For example...

"Among the issues that should have been investigated but were not, Waxman contended, were the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal, the controversy over the leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's name, and the pre-Iraq war use of intelligence." -- Sunday Mail (South Australia), November 12, 2005, Erica Werner in Los Angeles, "Now Bush in firing line," p. 47

34. I think halobeam's point was that congress' granting of immunity to Ollie resulted in
the dismissal of criminal charges against him. North had already been convicted but that conviction was vacated as a result of the immunity issue. Further prosecution was halted and charges dismissed due to the immunity issue.

... and with the Internet tools at his disposal, he can do a "data dump" that will foreclose other Dems from striking a Devil's bargain with the Administration on immunity.

Those tools weren't available to the open government advocates during Iran-Contra.

a long, long time. Ahead of many of the rest of his colleagues, even.

And now it appears, due to the Clinton fiasco, and the repukes changing the rules, he can issue subpoenas all on his own, which should be quite helpful - I imagine he'll be needing more than a few.

46. Newsweek: Will Rove Testify?
Newsweek
Jan. 26, 2007
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16832257/site/newsweek/

The president's political guru—and counselor Dan Bartlett—have been subpoenaed by Scooter Libby's lawyers. What it means for the most-watched trial in Washington—and who's next on the witness stand.

Jan. 26, 2007 - White House anxiety is mounting over the prospect that top officials—including deputy chief of staff Karl Rove and counselor Dan Bartlett-may be forced to provide potentially awkward testimony in the perjury and obstruction trial of Lewis (Scooter) Libby.

Both Rove and Bartlett have already received trial subpoenas from Libby’s defense lawyers, according to lawyers close to the case who asked not to be identified talking about sensitive matters. While that is no guarantee they will be called, the odds increased this week after Libby’s lawyer, Ted Wells, laid out a defense resting on the idea that his client, Vice President Dick Cheney’s former chief of staff, had been made a “scapegoat” to protect Rove. Cheney is expected to provide the most crucial testimony to back up Wells’s assertion, one of the lawyers close to the case said. The vice president personally penned an October 2003 note in which he wrote, “Not going to protect one staffer and sacrifice the other.” The note, read aloud in court by Wells, implied that Libby was the one being sacrificed in an effort to clear Rove of any role in leaking the identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame, wife of Iraq war critic Joe Wilson. “Wow, for all the talk about this being a White House that prides itself on loyalty and discipline, you’re not seeing much of it,” the lawyer said.

The possibility that Rove could be called to testify would bring his own role into sharper focus—and could prove important to Libby’s lawyers for several reasons. Rove has said in secret testimony that, during a chat on July 11, 2003, Libby told him he learned about Plame’s employment at the CIA from NBC Washington bureau chief Tim Russert, a legal source who asked not to be identified talking about grand jury matters told NEWSWEEK. If Rove repeats that story on the witness stand, it could back up Libby’s core assertion that he honestly, if mistakenly, thought he had heard about Wilson’s wife from the “Meet the Press” host—even though Russert denies he knew anything about Plame, and more than a half-dozen officials (including Cheney) have said they passed along the same information to Libby earlier than that.

50. Staff Attorneys...
... will be key in keeping the lines of communication open, to ensure no "stepping on toes" where the prosecution is concerned.

Done right, the committee staff can quietly turn up evidence that could aid the prosecutors - and then find that courtesy reciprocated later on down the road.

81. When I Called the Committee Staff Late Yesterday...
... they said that no hearings are contemplated while Fitzgerald is in court.

That said, I think it's safe to say that a lot of behind-the-scenes investigation has already taken place, and is ongoing.

If I were a betting man, I'd say that Fitzgerald's final report to Congress will be custom-made for Waxman.

I agree that his report can set the basis for whatever direction they want to take.

63. They should wait until the trial is over
The linked site has not been updated for a long time so I don't think Waxman is planning for this one immediately. After the trial I think it is very likely we do see Congressional investigations but for right now the Democrats don't need to get involved, when the prosecution has their eyes on Cheney and the defense is going after Rove things are not looking too good for the White House. Democrats can focus on other things at least for now, we can watch Fitzgerald tear them apart on the Plame issue.

I'm not saying he is not just wanted to point out that not even all the players freom the second paragraph are still in Congress!

Rep. Waxman has called for Government Reform Committee hearings on whether White House officials breached national security law by disclosing the identity of a CIA agent and has sought information from National Security Advisor Rice on how the White House responds to allegations regarding the release of classified information. Rep. Waxman and other senior members of Congress, including House Democratic Leader Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Daschle, have requested a GAO investigation into whether the White House complied with internal security procedures for protecting Valerie Plame's identity from disclosure and responding to the leak after it occurred.(Last Updated August 30, 2004)

72. I'll not mourn my 4 cents contribution to the restoration of democracy
it's the REAL purpose of courts of law. Courts are not just for corporations beating us down. They are our real recourse to right wrongs done to us by the elites.

Here's to a just outcome:toast:

75. The Wilsons didn't bring this case...
the CIA asked for the JUSTICE DEPARTMENT to investigate. Can't wait for the civil case the Wilson's are bringing against all of them. What this administration did to, not the only the Wilsons, but to this country by getting Brewster Jennings (CIA front gaining valuabel info on NUCLEAR weapons around the world) shut down, because of POLITICS is despicable, a violation of the espionage act, and treason.

I hope they all hang. So, no, don't FUCK the Wilsons...FUCK THIS ADMINISTRATION.

Have a nice, short stay!

76. Oh, I think maybe something will come of it all
For example, maybe the people in this administration will finally be held accountable for what was essentially an act of treason. If we have bigger fish to fry than restoring our democracy, I'd like to know what they are?

Welcome to DU - enjoy your stay!

but to post a 2004 article and claim it's current is not productive.
