Unions embrace proposed transfer tax

Labor leaders are rallying Santa Fe union members to campaign for a proposed tax on high-end home sales.

City voters, who will decide the fate of the real-estate transfer tax in a special election March 10, might soon hear from members of local affiliates of the Northern New Mexico Central Labor Council.

A poll conducted by the city in 2007 indicated a similar proposal that would have applied to homes sold for $500,000 or more was supported by a narrow majority of those surveyed. The poll found 52 percent of the Santa Fe voters contacted said they either strongly supported or somewhat supported such an effort.

Because the current proposal has a higher price threshold, further insulating middle-class buyers and sellers from the tax, some have speculated the ballot measure will have broader support.
