:applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:Thank, you, thank you…Ladies, gentlemen, and infiltrating freepers of DU, allow me to welcome to you the first official pre-inauguration party--and allow me to congratulate you on YOUR presidential election victory!
At last year’s awards, I mentioned that the Dem primary race had made DU a much less friendly place. In fact, I felt that it had gotten so unfriendly I considered taking a hiatus until the nominee was picked. Then the February DU pledge drive was announced, and I feared it would be a miserable failure. But I decided that the stakes were way too high to cut and run, and would fight to discuss the race and support my candidate without drowning in “Hillbots versus Obamatrons” invective. Well, now I say that I’d gladly do it all over again--not because my candidate won, but because our “civil war” made both him and DU that much stronger. (Sure the Repubs had a much smoother primary, but look at what they ended up with!)
In a similar vein, remember the MoveOn General Betray-us ad? That also dusted up DU for a while, but it ended up emboldening "we the people" with our own media muscle. In an earlier time, Rev. Wright would have sunk the S.S. Obama easily because the corporate media was the only “legitimate” source of truth while the blogosphere was a netherworld of extremist radicals. But thanks to those radicals, the corporate media could not overlook Wright’s photo-op with the Clintons or McCain’s ties to his own controversial clergyman. And in an earlier time, McCain probably would have surfed into the White House on the same wave of sychophantic press approval that Bush has. But with the blogosphere watching, the corporate media couldn’t supply it and still come across as competent, never mind credible. It is for those reasons that I present this year’s awards with a special pleasure—they’re the result of eight years of our fighting to level the media playing field.
The awards are for DU Late Breaking News stories that fall short of the DU learning curve—they’ve been either discussed and disposed of months earlier, are absurdly obvious, or (worst of all) both. They’re meant to reflect not upon the DUer who posted it, but upon the media outlet that thought it was providing us with—well, late breaking news. But enough of this serious talk—let’s get this party started. Thanks and props to my DU family for doing me so proud, and remember, though we’ve won a huge battle, we haven’t won the war. Oh, and about that February DU donation drive: not only was the goal reached, it got more than halfway there within the first thirty-six hours!
