WASHINGTON--Former U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel, 62, has been listed as a leading candidate for the post of ambassador to Japan, a source in the transition team of U.S. President-elect Barack Obama said Thursday. Hagel, who reportedly has not yet responded to the offer, is known as an authority on diplomatic affairs. Although he is a Republican, he criticized the Iraq war as an "absolute replay of
Vietnam " and opposed the troop "surge" in Iraq. Due to his nonpartisan stance, he was floated as a candidate for the post of secretary of state. He retired from the Senate last year.
Former U.S. Assistant Defense Secretary Joseph Nye, 71, was informally offered the post, Democratic Party sources said, but several other sources in the United States and Japan said he has shown reluctance to accept the offer.

Meanwhile, Kurt Campbell, former deputy assistant secretary of state, seems likely to succeed Christopher Hill, assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs at the U.S. State Department, according to sources.
Jeffrey Bader, who served as a deputy assistant secretary of state in the Clinton administration, has informally been selected as the next senior director for Asian affairs at the National Security Council, sources said.
