Displaced Anglicans Offered Refuge on Saddleback Campus
Senior pastor Rick Warren says orthodox Anglicans leading 'new reformation.'

Timothy C. Morgan

A few minutes ago, I received a letter from Saddleback's Rick Warren, who many conservative Anglicans realize has been extremely supportive of their cause.

Here's what he wrote in part to a handful of leaders:

"... (The Episcopal Church has) already considered me an adversary after partnering on projects with Kolini, Orumbi, and Nzimbi, and writing the TIME bio on Akinola.

But since last summer... I’ve been on Gene Robinson and other’s attack list for my position on gay marriage. .... brothers and sisters here at St. James in Newport Beach lost their California State Supreme Court case to keep their property.

We stand in solidarity with them, and with all orthodox, evangelical Anglicans. I offer the campus of Saddleback Church to any Anglican congregation who need a place to meet, or if you want to plant a new congregation in south Orange County."

The St. James parish is not giving up its court case and has plans to seek other legal remedy. In the meantime, other conservative Episcopal congregations or Anglican church planters might be eager to take pastor Rick up on his offer.

2. Meet the new fundamentalists...same as the old fundamentalists...
It amazes me how someone like Warren can, on the one hand, pal around with Melissa Ethridge and assure her that he doesn't want to stand in the way of her and her partner having full rights as a couple and, on the other hand, praise a renegade nutcase like Akinola, who has attempted to pass laws mandating imprisonment not only for gays and lesbians, but also for anyone who publicly advocates an end to persecution of gays and lesbians.

At least, with the old-timers like Falwell and Robertson, you knew where they stood: in favor of unashamed homophobia. But Warren, in trying to be "different," merely reveals himself as a greater hypocrite than any of them. And I hope he remembers what Jesus said about hypocrites...

7. Randi Rhodes talked about Melissa's article in HP yesterday - Upset with gays for not being "nice"
I heard Randi Rhodes yesterday on her radio show and she was talking to Melissa Etheridge and Randi said she is so upset with the gay community for being upset about Rick Warren after Melissa's article in Huffington Post. Randi said he was so nice to apologize - I guess Randi hasn't heard the truth about Warren and his views on women, control, and GLBT treatment in Africa and now this article.

I hope Randi wakes up and I really thought she of all people would be on top of this.

6. How much more has to come out about this guy before anyone realizes ...
... how dangerous he is?

I cannot believe that Obama (or his team) vetted this guy.

8. Good. Keep them out of my church.
We often get Anglican converts into the Eastern Orthodox Church, but we don't need those people. We already have enough homophobes, and we don't need them to dominate the Church like in years past. Take them away, Rick, and then take all of yourselves away onto some island or moon or wherever and stop hurting the rest of us with your hate.

13. I have posted often on the subject of Gene Robinson ..
My good friend Dr. Mark Anshutz (pastor then of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Highland Park (Dallas)) was the only member of the Texas delegation (lay or clergy) to vote in favor of Gene Robinson's installation as bishop. Mark lost his job over that vote. Texas' loss, in this case, was Cape Cod's gain.
