THE 114-year-old daughter of emancipated American slaves is now the world's oldest living person, following the death on Wednesday of Emiliano Mercado del Toro, 115, of Puerto Rico, the Guinness World Records group said overnight.
Emma Faust Tillman, 114, who lives in Connecticut, was born on November 22, 1892 in Gibsonville, North Carolina.
She once worked as a maid for actress Katharine Hepburn, Guinness said in a statement on its website.
When Ms Tillman was born, Benjamin Harrison was president of the United States, the telephone had not yet been invented and penicillin had not yet been discovered.
Since then, she has seen 20 different presidents in office and survived two world wars, as well as the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.
