Domain Registration and Creating a Website

I have to apologize because this is the third time I've asked about this, but my ideas have changed a bit.

All I want to do is register a domain name. At this moment, I just want to hold onto it, with the idea that in a few months I would want to hire someone to develop it. Some people at DU who are extremely talented have emailed me, and I'm grateful for that. They are doing the kind of thing I am talking about.

But right now I'm in the process of trying to register a simple domain name, and I can't seem to get out of these websites without them attaching all sorts of "hosting" packages, other domains that I don't want, or altering the name I'm trying to register.

I got burned once, and I don't want to get burned again.

Is there some way that I can simply register a domain name and hold it for a while, and later give that domain name to a company I trust to develop it into a website?

Sorry, I know this is very basic stuff. It's just stuff I don't know about.

ON EDIT:

To give you a specific example, one website said I would need Linux for $6.00 a month. Do I need to have that in the package to have someone else make a website? It sounds important--they make it sound important.

1. Yes. Godaddy will allow you to do this

you can buy a domain from them and they will park it for free. When you are ready to get some web hosting you just buy a hosting package from them or from other hosting companies out there. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions, i've been doing web development for over a decade.

When you go to order the domain they will try to throw their hosting packages and other things at you like everyone else does, just hit no thanks on everything (your total order shouldnt add up to more than $11).

2. Yes

This is very common. Just register the domain name through godaddy (or someone else) and uncheck any extras that you don't want. You can register it for up to 10 years and add an auto-renew function.

3. I've used Powerpipe.com..

... for many years with no problems.

You can register a domain there for 8$ a year. You don't have to buy hosting there.

4. I have a couple at GoDaddy that I haven't moved yet but most

6. Thanks to all of you. I just registered two domain names for two years.

Thanks to your advice I unchecked all the boxes and didn't get screwed. This only cost me around fity bucks compared to the $150 I wasted the other night.
