Report: U.S. Surveillance Society Running Rampant
By David Kravets EmailJanuary 12, 2009 | 4:30:49 PMCategories: Surveillance

Surveillance If you think you're being watched, you're probably right.

The American Civil Liberties Union posted a website Monday showing that government-financed surveillance cameras are running rampant across the United States.

.................

Barry Steinhardt, director of the ACLU's Technology and Liberty Program, said in a telephone interview that, while the cameras have helped nab suspects, he believes they provide a false sense of security.

"It's the illusion of security ... public authorities like to give the impression they are doing something about crime and terrorism," Steinhardt said.

He said it is impossible to quantify exactly how many government-backed surveillance cameras are in the public right of way, but they are in virtually every U.S. state.

Two questions posed on the ACLU site ask: "Do we want a society where an innocent individual can't walk down the street without being considered a potential criminal?" and "Do we want a society where people are comfortable with constant surveillance?"

1. I'm under surveillance the entire time I'm at work as well
and I'm in a vehicle.... sheesh.

I was watching a documentary on WWI and there was a fellow talking about how, prior to the war, a friend of his had traveled the world with only a visiting card for identification.

3. I make it a point to say the key words that will get the tapes rolling.

"Terrorist" "bin Laden" "Assasination". Other than that, my phone conversations are excruciatingly boring and you have to pity the poor fuckers listening in. That being said, I doubt anyone has ever listened in, but contend I could be wrong.

4. Datamining
Whether your call is ever reviewed by a human is in doubt, but what isn't in doubt is that every word you've ever spoken over the phone and each word I type right now goes into a searchable archive. Our lives are literally an open book to them.

Hi Agent Mike! :hi:

5. with the insane amount of surveillance, I'd like to think we fade into the static
along with all the real criminals who maybe only commit one faux pas that cause them to spike on radar. If they are listening to everyone's calls I hope that anytime the words "grass, stuff, or shit" are heard that they disappear into the background.

Intel's dirty little secret is the fact that they are choking on all the bad intel. They even are missing the "real bad guys" because of the glut of info being forced on them.
