Dan Rather Volunteers to Install New Toilet in Joe the Plumber’s Guest Bathroom
January 12, 2009
Citing a new era of the “Citizen Plumber,” a retired Dan Rather has volunteered to install a new toilet in Joe the Plumber’s guest bathroom while the fledgling war correspondent is off to Israel to report on the war.
“These Midwest Elites have dominated the plumbing industry for entirely too long,” Mr. Rather said during an impromptu interview in the plumbing aisle of a Home Depot in Toledo, Ohio, just down the road from Joe the Plumber’s suburban home. “Now is the time for Joe Merlot to come together with Joe Six Pack, or Joe the Plumber in this case.” Mr. Rather, who retired from CBS in 2006, was dressed in a newly purchased pair of Carhartt dungarees, and he wondered aloud whether his pants were slung low enough to show what he called “obligatory plumber crack.” This reporter can confirm that indeed they were.
When asked if he’d ever installed a toilet before, Mr. Rather said, “No, but how hard can it be? You slap it down and you plug it in. It’s not as though you need any training or experience or, God forbid, accreditation just to install a damn toilet.” He then asked this reporter where he could find the pry bar he would be using to yank out the old toilet. The veteran CBS anchorman then wandered off toward the pipes and fittings, absently scratching his ass as he gazed about at the alien landscape.
