-36 degrees in Upper Midwest --- !!!
Sharp cold wave shocks upper Midwest, temps to -36

BISMARCK, N.D. – Residents of the upper Midwest bundled up or just stayed inside Tuesday as a wave of bitterly cold air barreled south out of the Arctic, following on the heels of a fast-moving blizzard.

Some schools closed because of the cold and temperatures hit the single digits as far south as Kansas and Missouri.

The coldest air spilled across the Canadian prairie into the Dakotas and Minnesota. Grand Forks, N.D., dropped to a record low of 37 degrees below zero Tuesday morning, lopping six degrees off the old record set in 1979, the National Weather Service said.

In northern Minnesota, it was 35 below zero in Roseau and 36 below in Hallock, with wind chills down to 45 below in Hibbing. Just to the north, Winnipeg, Manitoba, also hit minus 36, according to Environment Canada.

In North Dakota, the Minot area got 6 inches of snow, on top of about a foot that fell late last week, and Bismarck collected 4. Bismarck, Fargo and Grand Forks all broke snow records for December, each with more than 30 inches.

Have you ever driven off with your extension cord still attached to your car? No one I know has ever done that, of course.

15. oh yeah I have LOLOLOL
One would think the BANG sound as the cord is yanked out of the plugin on the house would be warning enough, and the cord following me as I back out of the driveway, I would remember, but yes, I have driven down the street with it trailing under the car, and the other drivers laughing and/or pointing.

4. For years, that was just normal northern Minnesota winter weather
I once woke up (in Minneapolis) to hear the radio announcing that the high would be 27 below. This was during the early 1970s.

How does one cope? Layers of clothing and scarves covering everything except your eyes.

10. We finally get another real Minnesota winter - last one was '97, I think.
We got spoiled with the milder winters.

Those winters in the '70 were really severe. The winter of '82 into '83, whew, that one was short but brutal. It was mild up until Christmas then it alternated between massive amounts of snow and numbing cold.

16. Oh man, that was nasty
I remember the two-day blizzard that dumped three feet of snow on the Twin Cities. Then it turned brutally cold.

I had to attend a rehearsal in a building downtown, and my brother gave me a ride, because my car was dead. Because of traffic patterns, he had to let me off two blocks short of the rehearsal venue. After a block, my fingers were in pain, even though I was wearing gloves. Fortunately, Woolworth's still existed at the time, and I ducked in there, mostly to warm up before heading on, and I saw that they were selling ski mittens. Yes!! I immediately bought some, put them on over my gloves, and made it to the rehearsal without my fingers dropping off--or else I would not be typing this today. :-)

5. I honestly don't know how people can tolerate living in places where the temps
drop this much. We get some mighty cold spurts in Oklahoma, but they are usually short lived and things warm up quickly.

I don't care for cold weather, and I feel really bad for everyone who has to endure it. To me, I'd rather be hot with sweat running down into my eyes than freezing. I hate that "pins and needles" feeling on my skin when it's cold outside.

Stay warm and safe, DUers up north!

12. I live in N MN and from your neck of the woods
I can't remember it ever getting well below zero down there like up here, let me tell ya, if you ever experience walking through a parking lot trying to find a car in -19, wind chill -40 like it is here today, it will be an experience you won't soon forget......it sure makes me appreciate the warm winters down there! Send some warmth this way!

6. Welcome to my world.

:) We just finally came off a two-week subzero run here, with the coldest reported temperatures in the state being down around -80, and officially -60s in the Interior, so cold that gasoline was "like pudding."

I hope your cold snap is short.

Last week on my deck.
