10. Seriously, Blue, how did you all survive those temps last week
do people just forgo going outside?

Does everyone wear masks?

I guess one adapts/grows up with it, but it just seems like when it gets that cold your eyelids would freeze shut the second you walk outside?

20. Oh, no, you don't stay inside,
although they did have to cancel quite a few of the national championship X-country ski races; I think they wouldn't let them ski if it was colder than -4. But my husband and I were outside for a couple of hours New Year's Eve and for the Statehood 50th celebration on the 3rd. You just layer up, snowpants, lined boots, something across your mouth and nose -- or else don't breathe very deeply, because it DOES hurt. Thick gloves with liners, a hoodie, longjohns. We all look like Michelin men.

Here are a few of the spectators to the New Year's Eve events in Town Square Park. :)

23. I recall the local news reporting one winter after we had a cold snap like this
and it suddenly soared into the 20s that that is when the hospitals start seeing a lot of frost bite cases. We know how to dress when it's this cold, but when it gets "warm" like 20, it feels so good that we get careless about hats and gloves.

I'm good to about 30 below, but those Interior temperatures are just a little too frigid.

I'm hoping we're done with the super cold for a while. We're heading out to Nome for the end of the Iditarod in March, and sometimes it's kind of chilly out that way, too.

Supposedly you can plant tomatoes when the snow is off Shasta Bally (a local mountain).

Two more days of this and the snow WILL be off Shasta Bally.

Usually the snow is not off Shasta Bally until May. :(

45. Thanks for reminding me to go water my plants!
At least it's pleasant to be outside watering, which is more than I can say for a few days ago. When the Santa Ana first blew in it still felt cold, even though the air was warmer. I'm near the mountains in San Bernardino, so we REALLY get it here...you know, "stronger winds in and below the canyons." And that wind dries out potted plants faster than anything I know of, at any time of the year.

I can't believe I even tolerated temperatures like that. I never liked it then and today, I believe I would die of heat stroke if I had to do it all summer. Every now and then we get temps over a hundred here and we wilt, we really to.

30. About 20 degrees. Yesterday 20 and SUNNY! Today not so much sun.
And I thought we were expecting more snow, but so far, not.
I hear the overnight temperature is dropping way low and tomorrow should be a Zero-to-the-Bone day.

I'm a third generation native California girl who moved to Vermont in May, 2001.

And I LOVE VERMONT!!!!

Even though my entire family still resides in the home zone in southern California, I do NOT want to go back.

I am warm and toasty and happy with my slow-paced, no-traffic, no-pollution, total-civility-rules Vermont life.

It's like I told them when they worried about the move: "it's not like I'm standing on the corner all day in sub-zero weather, waving at cars."

And no... I don't even miss the beach. When I was a kid, I adored the beach and spent every moment of the summer in the waves, but 50 years later just getting a parking place ruined the very idea.

I know.... 20 degrees seems harsh, but... I really do love the time I get in the winter to recharge, renew, and assess my life.

43. I can relate
I moved from California to Alaska and I love it. It just warmed up to 20 from 0-20 below so we are pretty happy. I missed having seasons in California. We went to the snow once a year but I always wanted to be snowed in. It didn't rain nearly enough. Now I feel like I can finally relax and have no desire to go back. I just think California and I become tense. I am almost positive we live in the most beautiful scenery in the world so where is there to go? It doesn't hurt that we live in the banana belt of Alaska though, I couldn't handle 80 below.

68. No, it's not gorgeous in California
It's hot and dry, with no rain in sight. This is supposed to be the time when the aquifers recharge, and the snowpack accumulates, so we can have water in the other 3 seasons. 70 and no rain in sight is not good weather in the long run. I'd rather have the 50 degree weather, overcast skies and rain.

And it confuses my tender perennials into sprouting so they'll be killed when normal weather finally shows up.
