1. OMG
:(

Violence indeed is "not cool". And it's a real shit shame our society lets children think it is. But you know what will be said, "boys will be boys".

2. Oh, good Lord...
Okay, so the mother is furious that her son did this. But where the hell was she when this kid ran into these delinquents for the first time? Isn't she supposed to be a parent?!?

4. Normally I would criticize a parent for this
But I teach these kids (not the one in the video, but many others in this community) and the violence theme is just overwhelming in their lives. Many parents are fighting a losing battle. It's very sad.

6. I do put a lot of the blame on the parents
It's their responsibility to keep these kids from being exposed to degenerate cultures that promote violence. Using the V-chip to block out channels with violent music videos isn't enough. They need to be there to nurture their kids with a more positive and creative mindset so that you're not stuck trying to repair the damage when these kids show up in your classroom.

8. I agree
But I have seen too many parents do all they can but their kids still get lost to the streets. Many are single parents. They don't have the family or community support they need.

I could tell you stories that would turn your stomach. It's not always bad parenting.

9. Another thing
Too many of these kids are parents at 14 and 15. If their parents know they are sexually active they don't have community resources to put their daughters on birth control. There are very few clinics, insurance (for the ones who have it) won't cover birth control all the time and so kids get pregnant when they are much too young.

3. Do you think it is
the guns that are responsible or perhaps the total lack of parenting?

We have guns, locked and safe of course, and guess what? My kids are model citizens at school. My daughter is going to lunch with the principal tomorrow because she won that privilege. Every one of my kids teachers have been to our home for dinner and some come by just to hang out here.

Guns alone are not the issue. The issue is absentee, moran parents.

7. Violence is in, it's cool
So is not snitching. Kids this age will tell us they aren't going to snitch. That's the cool way to be these days.

Think about their role models and compare them to your children's role models. 10% of all African American men are in prison or have been incarcerated. There are more African American adults who have been to prison than to college. How many of the adults in your kids' lives have been in prison?

I know kids who have witnessed murder by the time they are 5 and 6 years old. I am 55 and I have NEVER even seen anyone die.

It's a different world, Gilligan. I have been working in that world for 3 decades and I can still get shocked by what I learn. And my heart gets broken all the time.
