Women in poor countries 300 times more likely to die in childbirth
About 99% of the 500,000 maternal deaths in 2005 occurred outside industrialised nations, more than half of them in Africa, Unicef said.

(...)

In Niger, the country with the world's highest maternal mortality, a woman has a one in seven chance of dying, during pregnancy or childbirth.

(...)

The number of maternal deaths has remained largely unchanged over the past two decades and has made it more difficult to reduce child mortality.

A newborn baby has less chance of surviving if its mother dies during or shortly after childbirth. Those born in developing countries are almost 14 times more likely to die during the first month of life.

Liberia had the highest rate of neonatal mortality at 66 deaths per 1,000 live births.

2. Yes, which is why our current policy of abstinence teaching in impoverished countries...
and refusing to support abortion is not only futile, it's tantamount to supporting murder of young women. I won't post links but they are so easy to find.

3. True.
And Obama's inaugural prayin' preacher is behind the demonization of condoms in Africa, too.

9. I know. I won't post links because it's too sad. I've read them over and over again.
But yes, you're quite right.

He's praying here, and uneducated people think he's helping people somewhere far away, when all Warren does is make the plight of mal-nourished women so much worse. There is so much that can happen to a woman who is pregnant and has no access to proper nourishment or medical care. Some are raped and with our policies in place, have no relief. And what's worse, people give their tiny Christian dollars to forward his marketing packages, which only ensure that some in the US get rich while others die.

4. I wonder if these women also have a higher pregnancy rate, too.
Not that they're trying to be pregnant, mind you. They probably just get stuck being pregnant.

5. Apparently condoms can't survive in that climate.
Weather- and religion-wise.

7. Well, I don't think the women have a choice in whether the men wear condoms either.

8. Heat-wise you just send polyurethane rather than latex.
Religion-wise, we just have to hope for people to get the fuck over being stupid.

10. In first world countries, we've forgotten how dangerous child birth has been historically.
In our recent past, it was the primary killer of women. It never changed in some places.

15. I think that's one reason the anti-choice crowd is able to have some sway.
People have forgotten that child-birth ALWAYS endangers a woman's life. It's not right that women should be required by law to endanger their lives for a child they don't want. That has to be a very personal choice.

It's really a matter of having the right to self-defense. If something, or someone is making you sick and threatening your life, you shouldn't be forced by the laws of the land to continue carrying them in your own body.
