Kucinich on the Destruction of the UN Headquarters in Gaza
http://www.opednews.com/articles/Kucinich-on-the-Destructio-by-Dennis-Kucinich-090115-621.html

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today made the following statement about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza on the House Floor:

"The attack on the United Nations headquarters in Gaza is further proof that a post-legal era in world affairs has taken shape; where law and moral principles are irrelevant, where might makes right, where retribution and vengeance, even against innocent children, fails to shake us from moral lethargy or political paralysis.

"Collective punishment, disproportionate use of force, using U.S. planes, helicopters and munitions to attack a wounded, starved and thirsty civilian population of mostly children trapped in a box called Gaza has become acceptable, perhaps because we have already accepted the deaths of over one million innocent civilians in Iraq in a war based on lies.

"There is a way out. We must ask those who were given our armaments for defense to stop the aggression, end the blockade, end the occupation, and reconnect with the high sentiments that rallied their own suffering, wounded people to nationhood generations ago. When we recognize the humanitarian disaster in Gaza, when we come to grips with the reality of suffering on both sides, we may yet find a way to save ourselves.

Israel shells UN headquarters in Gaza, destroys tonnes of humanitarian aid
By Ibrahim Barzak And Amy Teibel, The Associated Press

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Israel shelled the United Nations headquarters in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, engulfing the compound and a warehouse in fire and destroying a large stockpile of food and humanitarian supplies intended for Palestinian refugees.

UN workers and Palestinian firefighters, some wearing bulletproof jackets, struggled to douse the flames and pull bags of food aid from the debris.

Israeli officials said their forces were fired on from the compound by Hamas guerrillas.

UN officials at the scene dismissed the Israeli claim as "nonsense."

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who is in the region to end the devastating offensive in Gaza, demanded a "full explanation" for the attack, which also wounded three people.

He said the Israeli defence minister told him there had been a "grave mistake."

However, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the military fired artillery shells at the UN compound after Hamas opened fire from the location.

Gordon Brown branded the shelling of the United Nations headquarters in Gaza today as 'indefensible' after an intensified Israeli bombardment that also saw two hospitals struck by shells.

Using unusually strong language, the Prime Minister condemned the shelling that engulfed the compound and a warehouse in fire, destroying thousands of pounds of food and humanitarian supplies intended for Palestinian refugees.
