Coming in January on Lifetime,Prayers for Bobby, starring Sigourney Weaver, is based on the best-selling 1998 book by the same name. It's the true-story of Mary Griffith, whose son Bobby committed suicide because of her religious intolerance. The consequences of denying the basic humanity of her son's love set Mary on a path to understanding and she ultimately became a gay rights activist. This is a must see for anyone with GLBT friends or family members. Not only does it tell a heart breaking tail it showcases a very real story that relates specifically to Rick Warren. If you ever wondered why GLBT Americans and their Allies are pissed off about Warren watch this show (it airs on the 24th of January). Its vital that LGBT youth get support and leadership - this is a first step in trying to understand the toxic and dangerous lies of the ex-gay movement (which Warren is a part of).

1. I started reading the book and then had to stop

will pick it up again though. I remember watching a 20/20 about this and it broke my heart. Yes, this is what Warren is all about.

2. I read the book when I was coming out in college

At the time I had severe insomnia and only passed one class that semester. It was right after Matthew Sheppard had died and I was the co-president of the GLBT club on campus and was getting threats, harassing phone calls and letters from strangers that had read my name in the paper, I had to change all my locks on my doors. I walked around for weeks with my cell phone ready to call 911. It was a terrifying time for me and the only glimmer of hope outside of my supportive friends was this book. Sad as the story is it gave me hope and a reason to work through the experience. I will forever be grateful for Bobby's story.

Im sure Im not the only one that has had to endure hard times in the struggle of human rights. I tend not to share them in to much detail but felt it fit in the subject - that and I've recently come to the conclusion that all of in the fight need to tell our stories or nothing will ever change... here's to hoping any rewards that come from the fight are shared with those with the least - be it hope, opportunity or respect:)

7. No more than a lot of people I know

Im 38 so I know a lot of younger and older LGBT persons - I feel very fortunate to have great examples here and in my personal life from all generations and Civil RIghts movements.

I wish DU had a forum for sharing stories of how working on a movement has improved out lives - like an archive more than a discussion - it would be fascinating.
